Is George Lucas stoned?

Any of you folks caught the title for the next Star Wars movie yet?

Star Wars: Episode II Attack of the Clones

I'm not kidding.

Attack of the Clones...

I feel like I've fallen through a timewarp into the back seat of a chevy parked at a 1954 drive-in.

http://www.starwars.com/episode-ii/news/2001/08/news20010806.html

It boggles the mind.

Just when I was thinking, "Gee, it can't possibly be as bad as the Phantom Menace".

No words can explain to you all the extreme feeling of sorrow that I have for George Lucas' lack of taste. I liked "A Phantom Menace" for the most part. But, there were several problems with it. Also, I feel that most of the extra footage put into the first three movies (in the special edition) was lackluster and ruined the "mood" of the trilogy. It was great that they cleaned up the old prints and released it on widescreen, but Jabba looks terrible in "Star Wars" and the dance number in "Return" takes me out of the movie and puts me on cyber-Sesame Street. Phantom Menace was fun, and a real trip to watch on the big screen, but reminded me too much of this cyber-SS. Now, I can count on episode II and III to give me more of the same, and it's a damn shame.
So no, George isn't on crack. He's just rich now, and doesn't make movies that mean anything. Also, he can't seem to write for shit.

Lucas IS on drugs.

Send in the clones ...

Lucas needs to lay off of the bong hits and remember what made the first three so good ... it wasn't the acting (some of it is horrible) or even the special effects ...

Like Stephen King once wrote: Its the story, stupid.

The story was lacking in Episode One ... that and the ridiculous Jar-Jar Binks. I kept hoping that little thing would get squished.

Of course, I'll still go see Episode Two when it comes out ... kinda like a moth to a flame.

Yet another reason to avoid it altogether...

The Phantom Menace was so bad, sterile, pointless and boring that I don't know if I will see Episode 2 at all.

After all, if I wanted to see a two-hour commercial for toys, I could tape Saturday morning 'toons and fast-forward through the features…

I have come to the conclusion that Star Wars was a fluke, The Empire Stikes Back was a miracle and that the rest of the movies will be as bad as Return and Phantom.

I must confess that some of this angst might be residual disgust from the latest mega-disappointment science fiction film to defile the screen.

Man - I liked TPM! (must be one of the very few here)

TPM was all about setting the stage for the future conflict. The political intrigue was subtle and fairly well developed IMO.

There were weaknesses to be sure: JarJar is an aberation that MUST be destroyed! The entire Gungan race was poorly developed and offensive. The kid who played Anakin was annoying - especially when he's in the middle of a space battle spouting 'cool!' The race was rather pointless and merely acted as a 'filler' - it was false tension. The announcer was annoying!

I liked Palpatine - soon-to-be emperor... thought his character was as malevolent as it was sneaky and deceitful. The Jedi were made out to be much more badass than they were in the original films(as it should be - it was a lost art by Ep IV). Darth Maul was wicked... of course, he was played by Ray Park - a great martial artist(FYI: Park choreographed all of the sabre battles in TPM. He also did the swordplay choreography for The Princess Bride - I movie I love). The ship designs were fantastic and the fx were outstanding.

I would wager if they were to release TPM WITHOUT JarJar, most of those who said they disliked it would say otherwise.

I did not know that ANYONE liked TPM!

HC_Chief-

I hated TPM. It had no heart or soul. Eye candy with no substance whatsoever.

Lucas spent decades on a film to "set the stage" and failed to deliver any entertainment with all that time and money. Star Wars managed to deliver and exciting, moving film with nothing but a quick crawl before the opening sequence.

I did not care one whit what happened to any of the characters. The biggest set piece of the film [the race] was pointless. I did not feel a thing when one of the main characters was killed. I was subjected to a two-hour commercial for figurines, lunch boxes, book and other tie-in merchandise.

Jar-jar was insult on top of injury, but TPW would have been just as empty without him.

I see no difference between Planet of the Apes and The Phantom Menace. They both failed to make any connection to the characters. Both were vapid, empty, pretty sequels to charming, innovative films. Both were stunning disappointments foisted upon an unsuspecting public by Directors I used to enjoy. Both were clear warnings to avoid these directors in the future.

Wow.

Tell us how you really feel about TPM, Gaz ;)

Is Lucas directing Ep II? I thought he was only producing the next two films... as he did with TESB and ROTJ

I disagree re: as bad as POTA. TPM actually had scale and scope - it ranged over several planets and environments. POTA looked as though the whole thing was filmed on a backlot.

I don't know Kyle...

It really doesn't bother me as much.

I mean, if you think about it, there are several references to the Clone Wars in the other movies.

From the looks of things, the clones are where the Stormtroopers come from. It just sounds like this movie explains how the Empire got started....

Ok, I just proved I'm a geek.

Polish it as you will, a turd ranging over several planets and environments is still just a turd.

Actually I see both your points (Gaz, HC_Chief). Yes it was disapointing and yes it did lay the foundation for where the characters were going/their origin (Palpatine, etc).

I also can see that the cloning is in regard to the Storm Troopers. Actually, there is a manufacturing for "Dark" Troopers I believe that are supposed to be the elite badasses.

Yes, Gaz is right about the "Marketing" of TPM to produce/re-create the figurines that were SO popular years ago after Star Wars (these things are worth an absolute fortune today!).

The centering of the movie around the Pod Race was rediculous. The scene with the war with Gungan I thought was cool but did not hold a candle to the attack on Hoth in ESB. That is the type of stuff I was hoping to see but only better with TODAYS modern technology. I wanted to be blown away.

After the show I felt screwed and only hoped that the second movie would somehow "tie" it altogether and make TPM worthwhile.

Lucas hasn't made a decent movie since "TESB". "ROTD" was an ominous clue of kiddie-crap to come. I can only hope he gets his head together for the next one and gets back to making serious sci-fi.
