VARSITY
The Usual Preseason "Is San Diego Better Than We Think?" Post

Just saw an interesting stat that said that San Diego led seven games last year going into the final three minutes. I suspect that most will agree that they have improved their talent base this year, but what will the outcome be? Another cellar-dweller year, a streak upward to mediocrity, or a New Orleans-style playoff surprise?

My money's on another cellar-dweller year, but maybe I'm just saying that out of habit.

5-11 to 7-9.

They may win some games early, but there's just too many holes.

They have the worst offensive line in the league
They have decent receivers but no real threat
Tomlinson missed several weeks of camp, which is nearly always a bad omen for a rookie back, and he's running behind the worst O-line in the game...
Junior Seau is still good, but he's not a one-man wrecking crew any longer -- age is catching up
The corners have upgraded...from awful to merely bad
Just my opinion...

I think they're a .500+ ball club.

They have a relatively easy schedule. Big time upgrade at the most important position on the field. They brought Norv to help get some semblence of on offense.

They may have a sorry O-line, but Flutie doesn't need an O-line he's going to run around and make plays anyway. If Tomlinson can give them a decent running game they should reach 8-8 or possibly better.

The year they got Kramer and Harbaugh I though they were due to break out. That's the last time I ever pick the Chargers to due better. Until they actually get to a winning season, they're cellar dwellers in my mind.

I agree with just about every point Kyle made in post #1, although I think that the Patriots O-Line coud give the Bolts a run for their money as worst in the league.

I'm also hoping for his sake that the Chargers keep Tomlinson out of action until he is in true football shape.

I voted with the majority - an improved year (couldn't get worse), but not a "bottom to the top - cinderella story" year.

The Pats OL is really bad.

San Diego will not be any good - but they'll still be at least 400% improved over last season's w/l record ;)

The midgiemullet does not strike fear in my heart

I think they will be improved, you can't get much worse than 1-15, but they will be fighting to get out of the cellar. I think the Seahawks and the Chargers will be fighting for the fourth spot.:o

They do not scare me at all. Our D should own them. I like Flutie's determination but he has no real weapons except for maybe Dwight.

I watched the game last night and was really impressed with Flutie's play. I think they are going to be more of a threat than most people think, and could win 9 or 10 games this year.

Given the way they could not win the close games last year, I do expect them to improve much this year but not miraculously. I also feel that they may be the team to beat in about 3 years once Brees and Tomlinson have a chance to mature.

A Bolt to .500 - 8-8 to 9-7

Not good enough at too many areas at this point to do much better. They will be vastly improved however.

I'm not one to say I told you so but, I was the one of the 2-3 planeteers lobbying for Breese.

Just a reminder in case I'm right.
