Not just the storm surge, floods, wind, rain & tornadoes that accompany them, but the FREAKING PEOPLE FREAKING OUT!
Living on the upper Texas coast I'm pretty used to them. But some folks here in Houston are acting like it's the end of the world. Gas lines, water lines, battery lines, people evacuating when they don't need to & getting in the way of those that do, etc...I've had everything I need for the better part of a week now, mainly because we just went through it last week with Gustov. Ike was out there, everyone knew it could come our way, so why not prepare early??? Oh well, it's gonna get interesting...

You really can't blame them when the local media use words like "catastrophic" to describe the damage potential of Ike. H-town has been extremely lucky in that we haven't had a hurricane hit directly since Alicia. I am encouraged that people are stocking up instead of taking to the roads and creating another parking lot like Rita.

Well I think you're being a little hard on them. I mean sure they lost to Florida, but it was closer than the score showed, and if Marve can get his vertical game going then they will probably be pretty tough.

Coastal storm surge flooding of up to 20 ft above normal tide
levels...along with large and dangerous battering waves...can be
expected near and to the east of where the center of Ike makes
landfall...except at the heads of bays...where surge flooding of up
to 25 ft could occur. Coastal storm surge flooding of 6 to 8 feet
above normal tide levels...along with large and dangerous
waves...can be expected within the Tropical Storm Warning area
along the northern Gulf Coast. Above normal tides in the eastern
Gulf of Mexico should gradually subside over the next day or so.

If your sister and her husband live north or west houston, it shouldn't be too bad. Baytown is a different story. Traffic for those evacuating is going really smooth, so hopefully all will be well.
