Garciaparra retires as member of Boston Red Sox

FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP)—Nomar Garciaparra has retired as a member of the Boston Red Sox.

The 1997 American League MVP signed a one-day contract with his former team Wednesday, then announced he’s ending his 14-year career. Garciaparra will become an analyst for ESPN.

“From the first day I had the thrill of putting on a Red Sox uniform and playing in front of all the great fans at Fenway Park, I have felt at home in Boston,” Garciaparra said in a release. “While I had the privilege of playing with other legendary teams, I always saw myself retiring in a Red Sox uniform.”

A first-round draft pick in 1994, the shortstop played parts of nine seasons in Boston, winning batting titles in 1999 and 2000. But he may be most famous in Red Sox lore for being traded as part of a four-team deal in 2004, a move that helped the club win its first World Series championship in 86 years.

“Nomar will always hold a special place in Red Sox history and in the hearts of Red Sox Nation,” owner John Henry said. “His accomplishments on the field and in the community place him among the greatest players to wear a Red Sox uniform. We are very appreciative that Nomar is ending his career where it began.”

Garciaparra spent the past five seasons with the Cubs, Dodgers, and A’s. The six-time All-Star had a .313 career average with 229 home runs and 936 RBIs.

Overrated, overhyped, OCD weird f**ker.

If he was named John Smith, and wasn't weird, he wouldn't have been famous.

JMO, but I don't think I'm alone on it. I bet most Red Sox fans will only vaguely raise their heads from the midwinter Grapefruit League stupor enough even to acknowledge this move, with a halfhearted, "Huh, that's nice of the Sox, I guess." There will probably be no parades.

Also not fond of how he left. Also hear he was a crappy clubhouse guy. And they never won with him, so he's sort of the baseball equivalent of Ladainlian, LOL.

Thank goodness, no more 5 hour at bats because he has to do a dance after each pitch. There needs to be a freaking rule about that crap.

Mike Sweeney is the same way. He has to tighten his gloves between every pitch. Makes me insane. Just get in the box and take your hacks, man...

He's not a hall of famer, but for a while he was one of the best players in baseball when you consider his offensive numbers and the position he played. I don't know if he was overrated. I think he's looked at right about where he should be. It's not like many people think he's going into the hall of fame. I think the level of his fame was increased by playing in Boston and competeing directly against Jeter for a while, if anything. He peaked at a time when there was a bunch of really good shortstops in the majors and it became an ever bigger glamour position than it normally is. I don't think it was because of his looks or name. But yeah, I doubt Red Sox fans really care. They got their World Series, they don't worry about Nomar.
