Chiefs Chiefs vs. Bucs

Since I have the day off, I thought I'd watch the game again which was rebroadcast this morning/afternoon. My impressions:

The Good:

Matt Cassel
- Matt was crisp with his throws, put the ball exactly where it needed to be with good velocity and was excellent in recognizing mismatches (the field goal ending drive in the second half was top notch, where Charles was thrown to when he had a mismatch with a linebacker split wide and to Thomas Jones when he drew a defensive end). A very solid outing by Cassel.

Jamal Charles
- Charles looks a lot smoother and fluid this year running the ball, while still maintaining his speed. If he had a decent offensive line to run behind, we’d potentially be looking at some mind boggling statistics from him. He showed patience in letting his holes, albeit small ones, develop and caught the ball well out of the backfield.

Jovan Belcher
- Really looked good out there filling the gaps and getting to the ball. Showed a lot of strength on numerous plays by standing up and pushing back offensive linemen one on one. Very instinctive.

Tampa Bay Buccaneer Cheerleaders
- The young lady at the 8:03 mark in the fourth quarter...oh, mama.

The Bad:

Branden Albert
- Was constantly beat and out quicked. He got stood up several times by substantially smaller linebackers and couldn’t lock onto his man on run plays. Sorry Milkman, but this isn’t an adgenda or slanted bias. Albert simply isn’t very good.

Leonard Pope
- Caught a couple of balls, but ran horrible routes and can’t block. Ninth team TE Cody Slate (#80) looked All-Pro by comparison when he played in the fourth quarter.

Derrick Johnson
- Was non-existent and missed an easy tackle in the first quarter on a side line play allowing an extra five yards. Demarrio Williams looks like he knows that the starting ILB job is completely available as he showed a lot of fire and hustle in the second half.

The Ugly:

Thomas Jones
- Looked good running the ball in the first half, but coughed up the ball giving the Bucs excellent field position.

Brandon Flowers
- Whiff! Really bad decision and timing going for a pick when the ball was already at the defender. Touchdown Tampa.

Tony Moeaki
- I mean, really? He’s going to make Brodie Croyle look like Cal Ripken by comparison.

Random Observations:

The Chiefs were the better team and if it wasn’t a preseason game, they would have won this one going away. The running game looked really good with Jones, Charles and Battle all getting nice chunks of yardage on the ground. Weigmann should be fully entrenched as the starting center, which is a good thing. Nice to have Casey back in town. Tyson Jackson looked a lot better this game versus Atlanta. He pushed his man around a lot more and even had a quarterback pressure. Baby steps. Kendrick Lewis is outplaying Eric Berry so far at the safety spot, though Berry had a nice special teams tackle to start the game. A much better executed offensive game plan/play calling than in week one. Defense was still very vanilla. Brandon Carr looked very good and active. I’d like to see Asamoah getting reps at the LG spot with the second team versus RG as Waters looks like he’s running in lead boots out there. Rookie Lemuel Jean-Pierre looked solid at the center position when he got the chance in the fourth quarter.

I wonder if we watched the same game. Cassel was much better, but to say he put the throws exactly where he needed to is silly.

I thought Jones showed a little burst cutting up field and looks to be able to pick up tough short yards. Also, Flowers missing on one play isn't that big of a deal, we already know he is good.

I didn't notice Albert being that bad, I thought our line did much better.

How is it silly? He did. The throws were crisp and on target for the majority. To say that's "silly" is, in fact, silly.

That is correct. He did. However, his fumble was "ugly." That's why he wasn't listed in the "Bad" section, just the "Ugly" section.

It resulted in a touchdown. If that's "isn't that big of a deal," I don't know what it. What would be a "big deal" to you in terms of a cornerback ****ing up a play?

And see above. It was one of two "ugly" plays that the Chiefs had that resulted in points for the opposition. That's "ugly" in football terms.

They did. Weigmann played quite well. Lilja was okay. Surprisingly, Seamus O'Murphy actually had a decent game. Waters looked slow. However, Albert sucked. He whiffed on a lot of blocks, was constantly on the ground and was stood up repeatedly. He is unable to recover once he commits to a certain direction. I watched the game twice, and he was, without question, the worst of our staters on the offensive line.

The first throw to Chambers for the completion was clearly behind him. A throw on the money could have led to a much larger gain. All the fade routes (are they running these outside of the red zone because of his arm strength) were way off target. The lob to T Jones wasn't very accurate.

I'm not sure that his TD pass was received by the player he intended to throw it to.

I didn't realize the UGLY part was just for specific plays, I thought it was for total performance.

The Flowers deal isn't that big because it was in pre-season and we already know he can perform.

Cassel certainly looked better. But I'm not sure how comforted I am with that considering they limited him again to passes well under 10 yards. In fact, he only had 5 passes(13, 12, 17, 13, 16 yds) that ended up over 10 yards. And we can thank the WR/RB for the YAC that resulted in those passes being over 10 yards too. I'd hate to see Cassel's numbers minus the YAC....

But at least he did that better than last game. I think we'll see improvement from Cassel simply due to Weis limiting the offense to Cassel's abilities. But as others have pointed out, that will only last so long until opposing teams just stack the box and force us to pass long.

Charles continued to rock steady. He's doing everything right. Including not opening his mouth at all about being Jones' backup.

Albert isn't using very good leverage this year. And he really hasn't since the weight loss last year. I thought he looked slightly better overall this game, but he did have a couple flubs.

DeMorrio Williams definitely wanted to be on the field more than DJ. He was playing with the kind of passion that you only see out of DJ every 248 plays or so. DJ is clearly more athletic and more talented. But it's hard not to give the job to Williams. Dammit DJ....

Flowers will bounce back and be just fine. We shouldn't consider that game as an indication of anything other than Flowers trying to step up and make something happen by himself. He's a quick learner though, and this might actually help him understand his limits. As a smaller DB, he's got to learn when to go balls out and use his talent make a huge play, and when use his noggin and back off to make a smarter play that's maybe not as flashy. I'm not worried at all about him. He's just fine tuning.

Carr though, he's still got some learnin to do.

Is 5 out of 15 below average for % of passes going over 12 yards?

(I have no idea but it seems like it would be pretty close to average...if not even higher than average..but again I don't know the stats on this)

YAC Being the key term here. Yes, those would be good numbers....if they were actually 15 yards in the the air.

After getting to see the game today for the first time I must say I feel much better about the team. If Charles and McCluster stay healthy all year we're gonna put up some points !

Not throwing into the endzone on 3rd down in the redzone, at end of half. Take a chance to score a TD for crying out loud

What would it have hurt to try? We had a golden opportunity to go for 6 points at the end of half. I think Herm Edwards would have been proud to coach that same way to end the half.

Priest Holmes > Jamaal Charles.

Priest could block and IMO is a much better catcher out of the backfield....in fact he's one of the best ever at it.
