Would you retire to Detroit?

Serious question. The house-for-minivan thread got me thinking about it.

Houses cost money, and in some cases a lot of money. In Detroit, houses are not costing much of anything right now. If you could free up all of the equity in your home and buy a home for next to nothing there, you could have a nicer retirement with the additional cash. And Detroit has services and infrastructure and stuff.

Assume that you're not living in a terrible ghetto, and that you would join a bunch of other Detroit homesteaders who are like yourself, though not quite as smart and attractive since we need to be realistic.

Edit: Assume that you could get a home similar to yours for 5 to 10 percent of the price of selling your home. Or you can trade up, trade down, etc., with proportional discounts (e.g., buy a house twice as nice as yours for 10 to 20 percent of your selling price, or a house half as nice as yours for 2 to 5 percent of your selling price).

I'm going to lean no, but I admit I know next to nothing about the city, outside of its bad rep. Would I be well armed at all times?

Nope. A little colder than I'd like. I'm sure there are beautiful areas outisde of the city that have all the outdoor activities I enjoy, but just too cold there.

A friend of mine did what you are suggesting in Florida. He didn't get the smoking hot deal like the minivan lady did, but he took advantage of bubble burst.

I remember when I was on the production staff of Robocop they were like "WE ARE GOING TO NEED TO MAKE A SET OF A horrible looking city, one that looks like everyone has aids and on drugs, there needs to be shit falling off the buildings like the in the video game Rampage, it's going to be expensive" I am like **** lets just shoot the thing in Detriot.

Probably not. Housing is very affordable where I live and I'll never have that much equity stored in my house. So the disadvantages of living in Detroit would completely negate the relatively minor gain in cash on hand.
