People generally don't understand how severe the penalties can be for this sort of thing, and being drunk or grumpy is not an excuse. They probably think that maybe a cop will sternly warn them and they'll be let off with a slap on the wrist. The penalty for "interfering with a flight crew" is EXTREME compared to what little you need to do to break that law. If you simply block the aisle and ignore requests to return to your seat, you can be fined a whopping 25 grand.

If you are stupid enough to actually assault a crewmember, that carries a maximum punishment of 20 years and $250K. (life if a weapon is involved)

It doesn't matter if you think you are treated badly or you think you are in the right, just sit down, shut up, and obey all commands until you land. Feel free to complain to the airline, write letters, go to the media, or whatever after you are off the plane.

edit: oh and you won't be going to a local court, you'll be handled by the FBI and charged by a federal attorney.

The affidavit included a statement taken from one of the FBI agents who arrested Rogers. Agent Jake Green said Rogers told him "things were bad" and the "people on the plane were evil." I've only been on one flight where a person got arrested, and I didn't even notice it happening.

I've also never been seated next to an attractive female (spousal flights aside, of course). Tonight's flight was completely typical. On my right is a woman who looks like a man and has a weird and disturbing laugh, and on my left is Comic Book Guy from The Simpsons.
