Yet another nail in Dorsey's coffin

Here's a solid article on the future of the Chiefs that says everything better than I ever can.

Quote:
Every time news breaks of a multi-year extension for a quarterback, a familiar drama plays out. It starts with reports of ungodly sums of guaranteed money along with an average annual figure that approaches or exceeds $20 million. Then after a day or so, a new set of figures comes out that's much more in line what comparable players at similar ages have received. It's all part of the dance between the interests of sports agents and NFL teams.

Yet the media and public fall for it again and again.

The latest example is Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith. A week ago, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2005 draft signed a four-year deal first reported to be worth $68 million including a whopping $45 million in guarantees. Inevitably, these details proved to be misleading, as Smith is neither guaranteed $45 million at signing -- nor at any point if he doesn't meet certain thresholds.

Quote:
What's worse is that Smith's contract might cost Kansas City one or more of its most valuable players on defense. According to Spotrac, the Chiefs have only about $5.2 million in available cap space for 2015. With Smith's contract rising from a $4.6 million cap hit this year to $15.5 million next year, he'll eat up every bit of cap space the team rolls over into next year and more. That's bad news, considering that Pro Bowl linebacker Justin Houston is an unrestricted free agent after this season.

Coming off back-to-back double-digit sack campaigns, Houston is understandably asking for huge raise. While the salary cap will increase by as much as $12 million next offseason, the Chiefs have to also reserve some money for an even more valuable asset: All-Pro safety Eric Berry. By committing $37.8 million in cap spending over the next three years, Kansas City has effectively eliminated their chance to retain both -- or even either of -- those defensive stalwarts.

To make room Bowe and Hali will be gone. Still a stupid decision to extend check down machine.

This report is stupid. Completely ridiculous. The Chiefs can, should, and will cut Fasano, Daniel, devito, and Sean Smith to save up a good 10 mil. Hali is another 11 mil. If push comes to shove, you can also structure his contract the way they did smith's which is low cap hit year 1, new bonus in year 2. Also, I think bowes suspension no longer guarantees his contract. There is no excuse not to bring Houston and berry back next year.

The Chiefs have a shitload more cap flexibility than they had this year.

Zilla buried this article.

It's almost universally accepted that the Chiefs are parting ways with Sean Smith, and relatively commonly believed that Hali is gone as well. Add in a few of the cuts Zilla has mentioned, and we'll have enough to sign Houston, a B+-level FA, and our usual slew of randoms, plus draft picks.

Berry's currently contract is slightly north of $8m/year, too. That's about what he'll cost us to re-sign.

Berry's impact on our future cap is the same as it's always been.

The main problem I have with the Alex Smith signing is the timing. If we waited for after the season, we could've saved tons of cap room...

Actually by signing him today, we let 18 mil of his signing bonus get spread over 5 years instead of 4. Subtle difference but it allows you to cut him faster.

If we waited until after the season, then we are likely going to have to resort to the 2013 solution like we did with Bowe/Albert: sign one player to a gargantuan, out-sized contract, and the other has to be franchised. Both players would have us bent over a barrel, which is why Bowe is paid like a Top 6 WR, and Albert is no longer a Chief.

The contract is reasonably priced, and it gives us a couple opportunities to cut our losses in the next three years. It was also signed at a time of maximum Chiefs leverage -- which is why it's so reasonable.

The only reason not to like this extension is because you don't like Alex Smith as a QB.

Dumb article. Several contracts will be coming off the books next season via cuts. Extending Berry will give us even more cap room, his current number is at $11 mil.

If Bowe doesn't produce this year and play at a high level, they'll either ask for a paycut or release him too. There are tons of ways that they can make room for Houston.
