Mock (4/7)

Assumptions:

1. GM John Dorsey and HC Andy Reid are extended through 2021. QB Alex Smith is retained.

2. ILB Derrick Johnson will return mid-2017 season like Justin Houston did this season mid-2016.

3. Chiefs make a splash and manage to get their hands on ILB Gerald Hodges (49ers).

4. The Chiefs sign Terrance Mitchell to an extension halfway through the season.

On with the show:

1.27. QB DeShone Kizer, Notre Dame

Kizer and Mahomes are still on the board in this hypothetical, and in that case, the Chiefs are going to go with the player with the best upside in Reid's system. That's going to be Kizer, who is not the from-the-ground-up renovation project that Mahomes would be. The Chiefs are looking to get out from under Smith in 2018, and the best way to do that is to have a player that's ready to make some noise by this time next year. That's Kizer.

2.59. NT Elijah Qualls, Washington

The position everybody on ChiefsPlanet is sleeping on in the 2017 draft is nose tackle. The Chiefs have two very good nose tackles for 2017 in Jaye Howard and Bennie Logan, and T.J. Barnes is a fine third option with developmental upside. But both Howard and Logan are free agents this time next year, so the Chiefs need to make an early investment to make sure the DL can be successful for the long haul.

Qualls is a really good chunk of granite for the middle of the line. He's excellent collapsing the pocket, something that Dontari Poe consistently struggled at doing. Qualls needs to work on his fundamentals for his run defense, but there's no real reason with our defensive coaching staff that he can't fix that to be a commanding, line-of-scrimmage controlling presence by 2018, if not sooner.

3.97. RB Samaje Perine, Oklahoma

The Chiefs desperately need help at RB. If Ware goes down, which statistically speaking, he should at some point in 2017, then the Chiefs need another workhorse. Perine is every bit as powerful as Trent Richardson, but far more secure in his fundamentals. Perine really looks like a somewhat more juiced up Spencer Ware.

3.104. OLB Dawuane Smoot, Illinois

This is a ridiculous draft class for passrushers, so much so that a talented pocket-collapser like Smooth might still be available at the bottom of the third. Smoot is an excellent opportunity creator -- he's never put up great stats, but he's excellently coached, very fundamentally sound, and consistently forces pressures which the rest of his defense feeds off of.

4.132. CB Howard Wilson, Houston

5.170. WR Stacy Coley, Miami

5.180. QB Jerod Evans, Virginia Tech

The Chiefs further their post-Alex-Smith depth chart building.

6.216. RB T.J. Logan, North Carolina

6.218. ILB Dylan Cole, Missouri State

Picking a local kid. Had an insane Pro Day, and the Chiefs were in attendance.

7.245. TE Blake Jarwin, Oklahoma State

For some reason, i dont think they are worried too much at RB. I think we end up with ware, west, and Reeves on the depth chart this year. I think they liked Reeves last year but just had too many rb/gadget players on the roster and didnt have a full plan in place for what tyreek was going to bring to the table.

all honesty, I like the Smoot, Cole, and Jarwin selections.. but not much else.

have to look more into Perine, so can't really judge that one.
