Mock - Two weeks out

Getting excited for the draft to roll around. Here’s what I got....

TRADE: Chiefs send pick #54 (2) and #78 (3)
to Chicago for #39 (2) and #145 (5)

#39 (2) Selection: Carlton Davis, CB - Auburn
- The Chiefs are antsy at the prospect of a Fuller/Amerson /Nelson starting three at corner in their secondary. Making up for the impact of Marcus Peters will not be easy, and the Chiefs do not chance landing a plug-and-play prospect. Chicago does not have a third round pick, so KC sweetens the deal by giving up their higher third round pick but taking back a little bit in the fifth rounder they receive from Chicago.
Davis is a physical, press man specialist who relishes competition and he is active as run defender. A Davis addition will allow Sutton to be more aggressive and if the offense hold up their end of the bargain, the old pressuring styles we have seen from Sutton in the past can be employed more consistently if the Chiefs are scoring a lot of points in games.

#86 (3) Selection: DeShon Elliott, S - Texas
- The secondary makeover continues and the Chiefs get a player in Elliott who is super instinctual, creates turnovers, and again is a willing tackler. Where Elliott struggles a bit is isolated man coverage responsibilities, but look for the Chiefs to utilize him more as a zone/deep help responsibility player that can transition readily to box roles if needed.

#122 (4) Selection: Jalyn Holmes, DE - Ohio State
-Often overshadowed because of the talent around him, Holmes is one of the few prospects that can translate to a true 5 tech in Sutton’s scheme. Holmes is a high motor player who has developed some nice pass rush technique and his ball pursuit is excellent. He has the frame and athletic measurables to get bigger and stronger and the coaching he received at OSU should ease his transition to the demands of D-line play in the NFL.

#124 (4) Selection: Keke Coutee, WR - Texas Tech
- The first offensive pick by the Chiefs gives Mahomes a familiar target to fill the slot position vacated by Albert Wilson. A player like Jordan Lasley who is arguably more versatile and is a great deep threat makes sense here too, but the familiarity factor for Mahomes is too enticing, and Coutee’s acceleration post-catch is electric. Coutee will have to learn finer points in route running and blocking, but his upside as a playmaker and homerun appeal make him a welcome addition.


#145 (5) Selection: Mason Cole, C/OG - Michigan
- A run on some of the elite interior linemen coupled with the gap between picks after the trade with Chicago forces the Chiefs to wait in adding to the offensive line. As Paylor wrote in his first mock, Cole is versatile and tough as nails. He fits the Chiefs O-line profile size-wise, and is experienced in both power and zone blocking schemes. He can line up at either G or C and is durable. He can compete to perhaps displace Witzmann/Ehinger/Morse and provide excellent depth.

#196 (6) Selection: Duke Ejiofor, EDGE - Wake Forest
- There is a good chance Ejiofor is gone by this pick, but his stock has dropped after a combine injury and pedestrian athletic testing. Ejiofor has heavy hands and is a disruptor in the pass game. He is not quick twitch and does not have the best get-off, but he has a knack of being able to make himself “skinny” and gap penetrate effectively.

#233 (7) Selection: Brandon Facyson, CB - Virginia Tech
- Facyson is projected anywhere from a late 5th-7th round pick. Facyson is a versatile corner in where he has good size to be able to press, but also has had some success in a multiple VT defense that mixes a lot of zone in with man. Facyson is regarded as an intense competitor and is well regarded by teammates.

#243 (7) Selection: Jamil Demby, OT/OG - Maine
- Demby is a big, strong athlete who moves bodies in the run game and he loves to bury opponents when he can. Demby has good feet and is a patient pass blocker who protects his inside/post well, but has had a few struggles with outside speed off the edge. If coached up, Demby has the measurables, attitude, and athleticism to stick on a roster and become at worst a swing tackle or guard.


* I think the Chiefs may have to wait on TE, speed rusher depth and ILB depth. Perhaps cheaper vet options will be added post-draft.

I’m really starting to think the Chiefs like Jalyn Holmes more than we think they do.

Chris Jones was playing edge last year and has dropped down to the 280’s. Tanoh Kpassagnon will play both edge and inside.
Allen Bailey mentioned being more attack oriented.

I think we are seeing a new trend where our inside DL players are athletic enough to play outside and too quick for guards to handle on the inside. That gives us a ton of flexibility and could really come in handy if an injury occurs.

Jalyn Holmes is a great example of the type of player that fits this. Tall, long limbed, weighs just enough to be effective inside or outside and has played both roles.

Teams are valuing having quantity over quality after the top 10 because the dip from the mid first into the 3rd round really isn't a lot in this draft. I think Veach is leaking out interest to get teams to compete against each other to move down and get a trade that's below market avg.

I predict that if we're moving up, we're fleecing our trade partners.

Okay, just read about it. So, our answer to our shitty run defense is for our only above average DL to drop too much weight and become too light to hold up in the run game? How does that make any sense?
