"Way to early" alert: OL FAs

This coming offseason, Donovan Smith will hit free agency.

I have been convinced that the Smith signing would completely fail, because Veach signed him for peanuts in May, which is never when you're supposed to find cheap, talented starting LTs.

But Veach may have done it again. I can't believe this guy. Donovan Smith has looked really good in the preseason, and it's very possible he gives us a better season at LT this year than last year's Orlando Brown, who wanted to soak us of our cap space. My goodness.

If that's the case, Donovan Smith is going to hit free agency this offseason. Keep in mind, the Chiefs are already paying their other tackle insane dollars, and are paying Thuney (who becomes cuttable in 2025).

In addition to that, Trey Smith and Creed Humphrey are both going to hit free agency in 2025. Smith is a borderline Pro Bowler, and Humphrey is the second best center in the NFL, but the Chiefs under Andy Reid have never paid a starting center a second contract, a list that includes Rodney Hudson and Mitch Morse.

So, we only know one thing: Jawaan Taylor isn't going anywhere for a long time.

But what's your plan over the next couple of offseasons for Smith, Thuney, Humphrey, and Smith?

It probably goes without saying that you're not going to pay all five.

For my money, I think you extend Thuney and pay Humphrey. If there's a deal to be had with Taylor and Smith, you make them, but I can't see those deals being made.

You trade up as aggressively as possible for a LT this coming offseason, and find any number of solutions at RG in the 2025 offseason, including plugging in Wanya Morris.

I think you let Thuney go when it comes time and you look to the draft for a replacement. You also have Kinnard who may work out. You keep guys like Humphery and Smith, and you go young and controllable at the other guard spot.

The only deal I would consider with Smith, would be another one year deal so long as he plays well. But hey, if the dude pans out and wants to do a team friendly deal, I'd be for it.

Without deep diving the details, I draft a LT next year, I draft Thuneys replacement next year (more LGotf than instant starter) and I extend creed (top of center market) and trey (middle of guard market). The line will remain incredibly competitive in 2024 with Morris v drafted LT, and LGotf v Thuney. Then I draft my Allegretti (swing interior ol) in 2025. Hopefully all that pans out and I have another five years of deep, top tier oline secured.

I think a lot of it has to do with Chris Jones.

If Jones doesn't sign a big contract, we can keep our starters (Gay, Bolton, Creed, Trey) except Sneed, who we should let walk in FA for a number of reasons.

If Jones does sign and breaks the bank, I think we still get deals done with Bolton, Creed & Trey, with Gay being the odd man out.

You maybe can keep 2 of those other guys. Maybe.
