NFL | Clock Malfunction Affected NFL Europe Game - from www.KFFL.com
Wed, 6 Apr 2005 20:45:23 -0700 The Associated Press reports the NFL Europe game between the Cologne Centurions and Hamburg Sea Devils, which was held Saturday, Apr. 2, ended prematurely due to a clock malfunction. The visiting Sea Devils were at Cologne's 37-yard line on third down with 51 seconds to play. After Hamburg gained four yards on a running play, the clock continued to run. However, before the clock reached 20 seconds, it began to count down at an increased speed and time expired before the Sea Devils could run another play, according to the explanation given by the NFL. The game officials were unaware of the malfunction, which was caused by a computer error and was beyond the control of any individual. The game, which Cologne won by the score of 24-23, will not be replayed, and the result will not be changed. This is a tough one. My first instinct is to play a :51 second game starting at the 37, but there are just too many tangibles to pull it off fairly. |
