Babb- Chiefs buzz: Offensive effort is worst since 1986

Chiefs buzz: Offensive effort is worst since 1986

A once-in-a-generation performance for team

The Chiefs have been shut out a few times over the years, but Sunday’s weak offensive performance was their worst in 22 years.

Kansas City accumulated 127 total yards in its 34-0 loss at Carolina. That was the Chiefs’ lowest output since they gained 126 yards Oct. 12, 1986, in a 20-7 loss at Cleveland.

They did, however, score a touchdown in that game.

“I didn’t see that coming,” Chiefs coach Herm Edwards said Sunday. “We come in here and act like we never played before. It just wasn’t very good.”

The Chiefs had one first down in the first half, and running back Larry Johnson finished with 2 yards rushing Sunday.

Rookie Savage has learning experience

Chiefs rookie kick returner Dantrell Savage said a handful of mental mistakes Sunday might improve with experience.

Savage took over the full-time returner’s job last week after the Chiefs released B.J. Sams. Savage had been Sams’ backup.

Savage didn’t mishandle any kicks Sunday, but he ran backward three times. One of those times resulted in a 10-yard loss on a punt return.

“I’ll get more and more experience in that,” Savage said, “and I’ll know when to get up the field and when to get down.”

The Chiefs’ average starting field position Sunday was at their 25.

Youth didn’t prevail

Panthers wide receiver Muhsin Muhammad, a 35-year-old veteran, outran four of the Chiefs’ youngest players during a 47-yard touchdown catch and run.

Muhammad ran a crossing route and caught Jake Delhomme’s pass over the middle. The Chiefs’ young secondary, which includes two rookies and two third-year players, couldn’t catch up with Muhammad before he ran into the end zone.

Rookie Brandon Carr got a hand on Muhammad as he crossed the goal line.

This and that

•Edwards reported no injuries.

•Rookie defensive tackle Glenn Dorsey recorded his first forced fumble Sunday when he stripped the ball from another rookie, Carolina running back Jonathan Stewart.

•Defensive end Tamba Hali started his 37th consecutive game.

•Cornerback Patrick Surtain returned but didn’t start. He missed last week’s game because of a shoulder injury.

•Linebackers Napoleon Harris and Donnie Edwards, offensive linemen Branden Albert and Brian De La Puente, wide receiver Mark Bradley and quarterbacks Brodie Croyle and Ingle Martin were inactive Sunday.

He makes himself sound like a blubbering idiot. His press conferences sound like an interview with a 10 year old. "It just wasnt' very good" ??? NO SH*T.

"We lost and that is bad. but we made improvements and that is good." No, its not. thank you so much for your wisdom and guidance through this termoil, you are a beacon in the dark.

dumbass. I hope you are fired today along with your puppetmaster. I expected to loose this year, I really did, but when our learning curve is going backwards, and your best RB gets a WHOPPING 2 yards rushing, "That's bad."
