Former Saints, Rams coach Jim Haslett to be hired as Redskins' defensive coordinator

Former Saints, Rams coach Jim Haslett to be hired as Redskins' defensive coordinator

Add another name to the list of candidates for the Giants' defensive coordinator job now headed elsewhere.

Jim Haslett, the former coach of the Rams and Saints who spent last season with the United Football League as the head coach of the Florida Tuskers, has agreed to join Mike Shanahan in Washington as the Redskins' defensive coordinator, according to someone informed of the talks between Haslett and the team. The person requested anonymity because final details of Haslett's contract are still being worked out and no formal announcement has yet been made.
The person informed of Haslett's move to D.C. said the Giants spoke to the 54-year-old former Steelers coordinator over the phone but did not set up an interview. Clearly, a formal meeting was contingent on Haslett's getting past the 'Skins and Shanahan.
But earlier Tuesday, Washington lost one of their top targets when Mike Zimmer chose to remain with the Bengals. That made Haslett, who interviewed at Redskins Park on Monday, their sole leading candidate and trimmed the Giants' chances of meeting with him. By Tuesday night, Washington had gotten Haslett to agree to join his sixth team in his 16-year NFL coaching career.
The Haslett news came after Romeo Crennel informed the Giants he will pursue a job with the Chiefs. Only if a deal with Kansas City falls through will Crennel revisit a potential return to the Giants.
All of these developments mean the decision by Perry Fewell on whether to head to Chicago or East Rutherford is becoming a bigger one for Giants by the minute. There's also the possibility Tom Coughlin would now explore a reunion with Dick Jauron, though there seems to be very little movement on that front as of now.
