Interesting stat...

I wish they'd blitz a bit more...

Chiefs coach Todd Haley and his talented staff are showing a conservative approach can work in his pass-happy league. The Chiefs lead the AFC West with a 4-2 record built on running and smart defense. The Chiefs are averaging 35.2 runs a game with an incredible 5.0-yard average. Jamaal Charles and Thomas Jones are both on pace for 1,000-yard seasons. But the surprising numbers are on defense. Chiefs defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel is playing it smart and conservatively on defense. According to ESPN Stats & Information, the Chiefs have blitzed less than any team in football. Crennel has rushed an extra defender on only 18.9 percent of the pass plays. Last year, D-coordinator Clancy Pendergast blitzed on 32.4 percent of the pass plays, but quarterbacks had a 106.2 rating against Kansas City. This year, opponents are completing only 46.3 percent of their passes against Chiefs blitzes. Crennel is stressing coverage.

I thought Crennel would make a difference. Not this much of a difference. Basically the same players sans Smith, Arenas, Berry and Lewis, which is amazing considering 3 are rookies and one is a journeyman.

This is one of the reasons that I didn't really want Crennell here. I am a fan of the more aggressive version of the 3-4 that Pittsburg, the Jets and the Cowboys run.

That said, the thing that I liked, was that Crennel absolutely does a great job of gameplanning the other offenses biggest threat. I knew he was good, but I underestimated his ability in this area.

The Chiefs are pretty conservative on both sides of the ball.... but fundamentally sound. The defense will make the opponent string together long drives rather than make big plays.

I can't argue with the results.

It's nice to know they're doing what they are w/o the blitz. Maybe if/when they need it and pull it out of their bag of tricks, it'll be unexpected.

Not surprising that they're leaning heavily on this talented secondary though. And the improvement of the D-line has gotten us some sacks with a 3 or 4 man rush, been forever since we've seen that.

He probably realizes we dont have enough talented pass rushers, so he prefers to drop them back most of the time. As long as we are winning and in every game, i dont care what we do.

I think it's the opposite.

We beat the hell out SF without blitzing.

We put a lot of heat on Manning without blitzing.

I don't think we need it as much as people think.

The thing is, when we do blitz, they usually get pressure that changes the play. The Cleveland game and last week's game come to mind immediately as games where the blitz was very effective, especially in the second half, in forcing the opponent to punt.

Of course the other reason we don't blitz that much is because Hali is absolutely murdering offensive tackles. Even if he's not getting a sack, he's getting in the quarterback's face with consistency.

And when he's not doing either of those, he's being blatantly held.

Seems like, anyway.

This is year one. I think he is making certain that our young secondary understand how NFL coverage works...

in future years I kind of expect more blitzes.

The days of us being a blitzing team have likely ended for awhile.

Since 2001 NEs defense had only had like three years when they had a player with double digit sacks.

When we do blitz, it will catch opponents off guard but we wont be doing so frequently...that will likely change a bit in the playoffs depending on who we face of course.

Probably one reason why New England didn't blitz that much. So much turnover in those secondaries due to injury. Rookies played all the time in those lineups. It's how Asante Samuel earned booku bucks in this league

Stop the playoff talk. Lets just win the next game.
