Chiefs buzz

Update on Bowe, Waters

The Chiefs removed all doubts about wide receiver Dwayne Bowe’s availability for Sunday’s game against Baltimore by removing him from the week’s final injury report. Bowe was a full practice participant for the second straight day.

Guard Brian Waters returned to practice and was listed as probable on the injury report.

Both players had flulike symptoms this week and missed some practice time. A third player who had a similar illness, wide receiver Quinten Lawrence, also returned to practice.

The Chiefs appeared to avoid an epidemic that coach Todd Haley had feared. He indicated a day earlier that the Chiefs were fastidiously trying to avoid passing along germs.

“I wanted to make sure we were taking precautions,” Haley said.

Waters and Lawrence, who was also listed as probable for Sunday’s game, were the only players on the Chiefs’ injury report.

Ravens list 12 players

Meanwhile, the Ravens listed 12 players on their injury report, all being in the questionable or probable categories.

Three Pro Bowl defensive players were listed as questionable for Sunday’s game: Defensive tackle Haloti Ngata (thigh), linebacker Terrell Suggs (knee) and safety Ed Reed (chest). Also questionable is a fourth defensive starter, cornerback Josh Wilson (head).

Listed as probable are four starters: center Matt Birk (knee), wide receiver Derrick Mason (abdominals/knee), linebacker Jameel McClain (back) and tackle Michael Oher (knee/ankle). Also probable is the NFL’s leading kickoff returner, David Reed (wrist).

Fortunate with injuries

This isn’t the first time the Chiefs list many fewer injured players than their opponent. It was almost a weekly occurrence.

For the season, the Chiefs lost only one player they had real plans for and that was wide receiver Jerheme Urban. He injured his hand in the final preseason game and didn’t play during the regular season.

Otherwise, they’ve lost a handful of players for shorter periods of time. Dexter McCluster missed five games in the middle of the season.

“Like everybody else, we’ve had our share of (injured) guys and guys we’re not able to use,” Haley said. “We worked really hard in the offseason. In season, we do really emphasis trying to gain strength and work and run and condition and do all those things. But you do need some level of good fortune.

“At the same time, I think our guys have done a real good job of fighting through things that are going on and a lot of that is just desire to be out there and be a part of this.”

Raven’s brother missing

The brother of Baltimore safety Ed Reed is apparently missing after jumping into the Mississippi River to avoid police on Friday.

According to WWLTV.com, officers from the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office had been pursuing a man in St. Rose, La. Around 10 a.m., the man was seen jumping into the river.

The man is believed to be Brian Reed, 29, Reed’s younger brother. Their mother, Karen Reed, acknowledged that Brian Reed has struggled with drug and alcohol abuse.

Aggressiveness needed

Defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel said the NFL’s new overtime rules for playoff games could have an effect on how the Chiefs play defense. The new rules require each team to have a chance with the ball in overtime unless the team with the ball first scores a touchdown.

“You’ve got to think they’re going to be aggressive,” Crennel said. “So we have to be aggressive in trying to get them off the field the best way.”

Where are all the people who in 2009 and early 2010 TC were complaining about Haley's conditioning focus and techniques?

Like most other playoff teams, the Ravens are resting their horses before trip. Those guys will all be suited up and ready to go.

Denver rookie QB John Elway, on Jack Lambert, after Lambert and the Steelers knocked Elway out of his first game as a pro (1983).

The NFL sent us a press release this week outlining how to explain it to casual fans during our news cast. Our sports anchor couldn't even understand it. It gave me a migraine after the first paragraph
