David DeJesus or Alexis Gomez?

In 2004, it looks like if the Royals don't re-sign Raul Ibanez, which doesn't look like they will due to the fact that to keep Carlos Beltran, he will command quite a bit of money, and we won't be able to keep both, David DeJesus is the heir apparent to fill the void in left field. DeJesus put up solid numbers for the AAA Royals in 2003, but is he ready for the majors?

Alexis Gomez, who was selected to the AA Futures Game in 2003 alongside Zack Greinke has already had a brief stint in the majors last year, in which he batted leadoff for the Royals, and gave the organization a look into their future leadoff hitter. In 2004, will Gomez be able to put up the solid numbers like DeJesus should, or do you stick Gomez in AAA and let DeJesus lead-off for the 2004 season?

I know this will be an unpopular view, but I would say trade M. Sweeney for everything we can get. Why, you may ask? Because he's been hurt. When was the last time he played in more than 120 games? 110? I know, I know, he's a good guy. He's everything we would want as far as team player, team leader, all around good guy, not to mention that he's one of the best hitters in MLB bar none, WHEN HE'S HEALTHY! I just have a gut feeling that his back problems aren't going away. I hope and pray that this isn't the case, because he sacrificed a hell of alot to give the team he wanted to play for a break......We'll see how it rolls, but you and I know it's a business........ and I would hate to see Mike be p****d off at us because of a business decision. JMHO (Ihate baseball when it's all business )...........Go Kick a**

PHOG, I agree with you on this. But the fact that if we let Mike Sweeney go, and then let Carlos Beltran go in 2005, we are without ANY legimate superstar. The solution for Mike Sweeney is to stick him as our everyday DH, much like Edgar Martinez of the Seattle Mariners, and have Ken Harvey take over full-time at 1B and hope his offense comes around like it did in the Arizona Fall League.

The trading Sweeney thing probably won't happen, no matter how much sense it makes. His contract has many poison pills, including a limited no trade (he specifies 8 teams at the start of the season, everybody else is hosed), and if he is traded to one of those eight teams, his salary sky rockets to his 'street value' at the time he signed his contract with us, $15 million.

Yeah, realistically we cannot lose Mike Sweeney. With the apparent future of losing Carlos Beltran, Kansas City needs atleast ONE legitate superstar. Again, had Texas traded us Hank Blalock for Carlos Beltran at the beginning of the year, how sweet would that look in our lineup, with his 28th homerun tonight?
