KU's Meier hurting more than he let on

CJOnline Link

By Kevin Haskin
The Capital-Journal

LAWRENCE -- In hindsight, leaving freshman quarterback Kerry Meier in at quarterback may not have been the right move for Kansas in a double-overtime loss Friday at Toledo.

Meier could be seen shaking his right hand after a hit early in the fourth quarter, and KU coach Mark Mangino acknowledged Sunday the injury limited his quarterback's range of motion.

"Early in the fourth quarter he got rolled under a pile," Mangino said. "I asked him during the game if he was OK and he said he was. Actually, after the game I found out he wasn't, but he's a 19-year-old kid who's extremely competitive. He didn't want to come off the field."

Although Meier did not receive any repetitions in practice Sunday, Mangino expects his starter to be ready Saturday when Kansas (2-1) plays South Florida (3-0) at 6 p.m. in Memorial Stadium.

Kansas does not disclose injuries, though Meier appeared to hurt his wrist or hand.

He was examined by a team surgeon, who informed Mangino the injury would take about 48 hours to heal, enabling Meier to return to practice early this week.

"It affected his range of motion," Mangino said. "and we could tell after the game watching the tape he had a little bit of a problem.

"But gee whiz, he is a tough customer and I think that type of mentality in the long run will benefit us."

The 37-31 setback included four interceptions Meier threw, including one in the second overtime.

In addition, a botched handoff between him and running back Jon Cornish ended the first OT with the Jayhawks only needing to set up a field goal attempt after holding Toledo scoreless.

Yet Meier did guide KU on a 69-yard scoring march in the fourth quarter, which he capped by running in the game-tying two-point conversion at the 3:55 mark.

While his arm looked dead on the overtime interception, other balls he threw had considerable zip. He finished 23 of 41 for 243 yards, with two touchdowns.

Along the sideline, the KU medical staff detected bruising, Mangino said, but Meier insisted he was fine.

"I made a coaching decision to leave him in the game, so any turnovers that were thought to be attributed to him should be attributed to me," Mangino said.

"We're not going to make any excuses. Hindsight is always 20-20 vision.

"But when you consider all the other things he did in the game, he kept our offense in the game all night long with his plays. The reason we were able to compete with five turnovers was because of Kerry, too."

Another game on television for KU

Link

Kansas vs. Nebraska to Kickoff at 6 p.m. on FSN

Sept. 18, 2006

LAWRENCE, Kan. -- The University of Kansas vs. Nebraska football game scheduled for Sept. 30 will kickoff at 6 p.m. from NU's Memorial Stadium and will be aired by FoxSports Net. The contest marks KU's third-consecutive game selected for television.

Last season, KU snapped a 36-game losing streak to Nebraska with its 40-15 win in Lawrence. The Jayhawks held the Cornhuskers to 138 yards of total offense, including just 21 rushing yards.

Yeah, I read that. You could probably attribute that to at least one of the INT's.

That is tough luck. I can't remember the last time KU has had a healthy QB all season.

That game was a complete clusterfuck. How do you give up 28 total yards in the SECOND HALF and LOSE?!

You have a freshman QB and let him do a little too much. Probably not the wisest decision on the coach's part.

BTW,
I'm thinking about going to the KU football game this weekend. I've never been to a college football game. Anyone else going? Anyone ever been to a KU football game? Anything I should know?

Park in the lots across from Allen Field House and take the shuttle to the Stadium. There is very little parking around the stadium. I think the shuttle costs a couple bucks, round trip.

The weather should be ok, but Memorial stadium is the coldest ****ing stadium ever. Keep that in mind if the wind is blowing.

Also, be prepared to lose :P Jim Leavitt is a very good coach and USF is a decent team. Actually, it should be a decent game.

You'll need to remember these finer points of the game and pass them along to all the other folks you'll be sitting around.

1) A field goal in football is worth 3 points. I know you geniouses down there are used to it being worth just two points unless it comes from behind an arc. But there is no arc in football.

2) The field is 100 yards long. And no, John Wooden did not pour the concrete for the stadium.

3) It's okay to stay past halftime.

4) American Eagle and Hollister clothing is a must.

5)The ref's are not out to get your team. (Unless you're OU)

6) That's not a big blue clothed Barney the dinasaur on your sideline. It's actually your coach.

Here to help.

Ok, thanks Saul. I know USF is a good team. I also know that KU went undefeated at home last year. Last week, this defense started to resemble that one from a year ago. I have confidence in them. I just hope Meier can get it together this week.

Oh, isn't that cute. A purple pussy talking smack.
Look, I know it's the easy thing to talk like there are no football fans of the Jayhawks, but the facts say otherwise. For evidence, look at how many games have been selling out the past few years.

As for me, I've been a KU football fan just about as long as I've been a Chiefs fan (since early 90s). Only reason I haven't been to a KU football game is because A)it's harder for me to go to a football game on Saturdays - often busy or B)Terry Allen's teams weren't worth wasting cash to see them get beaten.

Oh, and KU will beat KSU this year.

USF is an a decent team, but they aren't what I would consider anything close to "good". They would be comparable to Marshall, IMO, which wasn't a very good team either. S. Fla's offense is pretty marginal. They only put up 21 points on FIU and 24 on Central Florida - 2 poor defenses. The defense is probably the best part of their team. I think KU takes care of them 27-13.

Good luck.

USF's top twq RB's are on the shelf. They are playing a walk-on. They've struggled to say the least.

Damn, wish I would have known a few weeks ago... I would have given you my tickets & parking pass!! I have a family thing to attend (read: wife requires me to go to her parents' house on freaking gameday), so we gave our tickets away to our neighbors.

People "rent" parking in yards throughout the neighborhoods N of the stadium. Prior to this season we always parked at 7th & Mississippi for $5. Go early.... arrive at least 1.5 hrs before kickoff!!

Hey William: I'm selling my tix to the KSU game. 2 adult, 2 youth, 1 parking pass (13th & Mississippi; parking garage across street from stadium ). $300. Interested?

USF is really down this year (injuries, etc.). Honestly, this should be a cakewalk for the Hawks.

Should be, but so should the Toledo game. KU trounced the Rockets and still blew it.

Yes, I am freaking bitter about that loss. I have never been so disgusted by a football game.
