What role in KC could Priest possibly play?
Lamar said he's hoping this guy could consider returning in 2007.

A guy who's lead the AFC in rushing yardage a time or two, a guy who spearheaded the league's most productive offense for five years, a guy who broke the record for rushing touchdowns in a year...

What role could a guy like this possibly fit into on a team that has absolutely everything it needs from LJ?

Replace Bennett, and get 10 runs a game, max? Would Priest settle for that?

Use his superior blocking ability and sure-handedness at fullback, paving the way for LJ down the middle? Would Priest settle for that?

No and no. Priest, for all his heart, understands that he is (was?) a marquee runner in the NFL. And all evidence of Priest's personality indicates that he wants to be the alpha dog, and vaporizes when that's not the case.

Do we, therefore, have trade bait? Or can we fit Priest into a role that (a.) the Chiefs need his skills for, and (b.) Priest would be satisfied with?

I know the guy who cuts the hair of Trent Green's wife's quilting bee partner. He says we're trading Larry Johnson and Priest Holmes to Washington for Clinton Portis, that belt and 4 first round draft picks in 2012, 2013, 2016 and 2022.

(Which, if you follow the Mayan calendar, REALLY sucks)

I think the most we could get for Priest Holmes in way of a trade would be Jake Plummer.

The man has been out of the game for 2 years now with major injuries to his hip and back. He is a liability that has a huge price tag.

TBH, I wish him well in his endeavours but for the sake of his health and his family... he needs to hang them up.

He missed the last nine games of the season after skipping the last eight games of the 2004 season with a knee injury. He has appeared in all 16 games in a season only four times since breaking into the NFL in 1997.

Peterson said Holmes, who is under contract through 2009, told him Nov. 24 that he wanted to remain on the physically unable to perform list through this season.

"We're 12 weeks into the regular season," Peterson said. "Without getting into the medical aspects of it, I think there were some questions as to whether he could have himself ready to play."

Peterson declined to say whether Holmes would have been able to return had he gotten the same evaluations earlier in the season rather than within the past week.

Holmes had his best year in 2003 after a lucrative contract extension, rushing for 1,420 yards and setting an NFL record with 27 touchdowns. Seattle's Shaun Alexander broke the record with 28 TDs last year.

Since Holmes' injury, though, Larry Johnson has emerged as Kansas City's marquee running back and Holmes has been all but invisible, staying at his home in Texas instead of working out with the Chiefs in Kansas City.

That was nothing unusual for the intensely private and enigmatic back who became a surprise star after going undrafted out of Texas.

He joined Baltimore as a rookie free agent in 1997, rushing for 1,008 yards the following season, before taking on a reduced role behind Jamal Lewis. He came to Kansas City as an unrestricted free agent before the 2001 season, when he led the league in rushing with 1,555 yards and earned his first Pro Bowl berth.

He ran for 1,615 yards in 2002, third in the league, despite missing the last two games with a hip injury that prompted the Chiefs to take Johnson with their first-round pick in the 2003 draft.

"With Priest, you can never count him out," said Holmes' agent, Todd France. "In my mind, there's no question. In his mind, there's no question.

"In everyone else's mind, he's been second-guessed his entire career, and people have been wrong."

Peterson said he has maintained regular contact with Holmes and the team understood and supported the running back's decision to stay in Texas.

"He felt that until he could play where he'd like to be, at 100 percent, and to practice at 100 percent, he didn't want to be a distraction," Peterson said.

Wow, we threw the poor schmoe under the bus in a hurry didn't we?

There are teams starting Ruben Droughns, Justin Fargas, Kevan Barlow and Wali Lundy at tailback. His signing bonus will accelerate against OUR cap, so it's not as though he'd be a huge financial risk for the team trading for him.

There will be teams willing to take a chance on Priest Holmes. Will he get us a 1st day pick? Nope, not likely, but he could net us a 4th rounder or so. The guy was never a burner anyway, so even if he loses a step, he'd still be a guy that can come in, eat some clock and move the chains 4 yards at a time.

I actually think he'd be a very good fit with the Jets. He's a good reciever out of the backfield, he'd give Pennington a decent checkdown and he'd likely be part of a very productive platoon with Leon Washington doing some of the heavier lifting between the 30s. The hitch would be if NYJ is still upset over the Edwards dealings.
