sorry to hear about the luck.
If its any consolation, this crap always seems to come in threes, so you should be looking up now...i thought i've had a bad streak lately..but this stuff puts stuff in perspective. I see you do transportation management...any GIS? I know a couple of guys near peduka that might be able to hook you up. |

I feel your pain ROYC75.
My company merged and moved to the East Coast. I didn't move with them so I was let go back in September. Then they called about 3 weeks later and asked my to come back through the end of the year (which I did). Now I'm looking for work again. All I can say is I hope your company offers some sort of severance package to soften the blow. It's helping me! Roy,
I know this might sound stupid, but you should put together a good resume and post it on monster.com. I put my resume on there, and searched the jobs in my area. You can apply online to most jobs and send them your resume that way. I just applied to as many jobs as I was qualified for and had people calling me for interviews off the hook. From there you can see which jobs you want to interview for, and which jobs are just a waste of your time. It was worth it for me, and it is free. I also created a resume with Word, and e-mailed it to jobs posted on hotjobs.com. I got several interviews from that website too. Give 'em a try, and good luck. Roy,
Bummer, dude. Been there, the same 'atom bomb' downsizing thing a year or so ago. While empathy is a good thing, maybe a few more useful links will help more than another 'been there' story. Here's a decent link on how to work up a scannable resume. Buzzwords and terms that a computer scanning 1000 resumes will focus on...they vary between industries, but the concept is the same. Use buzzwords and industry jargon, and enough 'action' words to sink a ship. The more of 'em you can work in, the more times you'll blip on the HR radar: http://www.iflyswa.com/careers/scanres.html#format Be prepared to cobble up a different resume' for different jobs on a daily basis. A few different words, shift a paragraph, stress this instead of that, and you can attack a whole new batch of HR departments. If you don't have WORD software at home, the nearest library can fix you up. While you're there, grab a few books on writing resume's, maybe a few 'motivation' books. Can't hurt, usually helps. The earlier tip to use Monster.com is a good one-that's where I got my current job. http://www.monsterboard.com/ and another good job board: http://www.headhunter.net/JobSeeker/Index.htm You can do some research on potential employers at Hoovers.com. No reason to go to work for somebody about to go belly up. http://www.hoovers.com/career/ For a list of dot.com's going under, there's always: (the board autocensors it...think http://www.(fword)edcompany.com) Or see what the employees at other companies have to say at the vault.com http://www.vault.com/index.html This happens to all of us sooner or later. Spend 8 hours a day hunting up a better job, your new job is finding a new job. Get up and dress as if you were going to work, set a schedule to job hunt, be 'on time' to do your computer search and so on, don't fall into the 'sweat pants and TV' trap around the house, that can lead to some other problems. Don't go there. 80% of this is attitude, so act like this is a 'good thing'...and damned if you won't start believing it soon. Few of us ever get a 'better' job until we're forced to, the laws of inertia are laws for a reason. Look at this as a chance to figure out something you'd LIKE to do, work where you'd LIKE to work. Could be the proverbial blessing in disguise. Good hunting.

Roy, hang in there.
Keep yourself focused. Don't lose the sight of your goal. BigChiefsfan said it best-your new job is to find a new job. You are now man on a mission. Post your resume on monster.com and headhunter.com. Think about who you know that can help you find a job. Contact your friends or college buddies, you would be suprised to find out that "your buddy knows somebody who is looking for people like you". I got two jobs just by talking to people. Excercise plenty. And the most important thing is not to get demoralized. You will be all right. CHIEFS in 2001! |

Roy,
I just moved to Harrisburg Pennylvania about 7 months ago. After a month with the company I find out thier merging with a UK firm. Many of the IT people are out the door already in anticpation of being layed off. I moved out here after breaking up with the girl who I thought was going to be my wife leaving her, friends and family behind. I guess I'm trying to say that I kinda know what your going thru and having the support of loved ones should help you out. Hang in there and let us know how things go. Roy...
I think I got you beat... The Thursday before Martin Luther Kings BD... We've been hearing that VP of operations in Ohio was coming to my job in Indiana for a visit. We didn't expect nothing. When they got there. They did a little looking around then had a meeting with all the Sups and Managers. Then our Manager told all of us to log out of the phones and go to the meeting room. They waited until everyone was in there and then hit us with it. We're moving all of operations for the Lafayette branch to our Ohio branch. Our jaw hit the floor. We asked "When"? "Immediately"! "You have 15 minutes to clear out your offices and as of now all calls are being routed to our offices". Right then and there... I saw how some people end up going postal. AS a result I had to move to Kansas City because of shortage of I/T jobs in the Lafayette area. I just started working for HRBlock last Monday until I get on my feet. Of course bills keep coming up and my first paycheck isn't until Feb 9th. I have some saved for a rainy day (and this is it) but it's, basically down to which bills have priority. So in less than a weeks time I got laid off (thursday), got a HR Blcok Seasonal (technical support) job(Friday) registered for my 3 networking classes and not too mention had to buy $200 worth of books. Now I'm back home and currently looking for perm. employment within my current I/T field. Just think: I was out of town and lost my job with no-where to run. So as a result I'm in K.C. and can kick it with you fellow BB members now. Hoping this sheds some light on your situation... It couldbe MUCH worse. Keep your head up! I AM! |
