New PC...to custom build or not custom build...that is the question...

On the DELL website...I could drop down a hefty $2,795 for an XPS 710 with the following specs...

OPERATING SYSTEM Genuine Windows® XP Media Center 2005 Edition with re-installation CD edit
UPGRADE TO WINDOWS VISTA Express Upgrade to Windows Vista Home Premium from XP Media Center Edition edit
MEMORY 2GB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 667MHz - 2 DIMMs edit
HARD DRIVE 320GB Serial ATA 3Gb/s Hard Drive (7200RPM) w/DataBurst Cache™ edit
OPTICAL DRIVE Dual Drives: 48x Combo + 16x DVD+/-RW w/ dbl layer write capable edit
MONITOR 20 inch UltraSharp™ 2007WFP Widescreen Digital Flat Panel edit
VIDEO CARD 256MB nVidia GeForce 7900 GS edit
SOUND CARD Sound Blaster® X-Fi™ XtremeMusic (D) Sound Card edit
My Accessories
SPEAKERS Dell A525 30 Watt 2.1 Stereo Speakers with Subwoofer edit
KEYBOARD Saitek 104-Key Eclipse Backlit Gaming Keyboard (Ships Separately) edit
MOUSE Dell Optical USB Mouse edit
POWER PROTECTION SurgeArrest 11 Outlet with Tel2/Splitter, Coax and Ethernet Protection edit
FLOPPY & MEDIA READER 13 in 1 Media Card Reader and 3.5 in Floppy Drive

Would I be saving money if I decided to have a friend help me build a similar PC?

Is DELL a good build to go with?

Need some input..please

And...to the naysayers.."OMG you said you werent gonna create any more threads!!?!? WTF!?!?" I'll make it a poll bitches...

Why would you layout all that cash and go with the Home version of the OS? Get XP Pro with the upgrade to VistaBiz later.

After I loaded up another 500GB HD in mine, I think mine was still less than this, but I went through Dell and went with their SmartDeals. I didn't go with the higher end Core2Duo processor, but did go with DVD/DVD-RW and the 20 inch flat panel (not the wide). Also bumped up my OS and got 4 GB RAM.

here is a list of parts straight from newegg done in about 10 minutes.....
Some of this is TOP of the Line and some is not, but it is all high quality stuff with great reviews. These are the main parts you would need to upgrade, just use your old CASE, DVD DRIVES, Floppy, Keyboard, Mouse, SOFTWARE.

Western Digital Raptor WD740ADFD 74GB 10,000 RPM 16MB Cache Serial ATA150 Hard Drive - OEM = $140
Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 Conroe 2.4GHz 4M shared L2 Cache LGA 775 Processor = $315
EVGA 640-P2-N821-AR GeForce 8800GTS 640MB 320-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 HDCP Video Card = $360
Antec True Power Trio TP3-650 ATX12V 650W Power Supply with Three 12V Rails 100 - 240 V UL, CUL, FCC, TUV, CE, C-tick, CCC, CB = $130
ASUS P5N-E SLI LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 650i SLI ATX Intel Motherboard = $135
G.SKILL 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory = $185

$$$$$ 1265.00

Some of this can be found even cheaper... I found the Raptors at best buy the other day for $120 a pop, so I picked up 2 of them and plopped them in a RAID 0.

Nice system, but you could do it cheaper building your own.... not 1/2 the price, but cheaper and much more customized...

If you're interested in parting one yourself or having a buddy help, I would recommend going to www.pricewatch.com and pricing some parts. Check the mobo/cpu/memory combo deals, as you'll usually save money going that route...

I got one from a guy on Ebay for about $2k using Buy it Now. It's got similar specs to that one, except without a monitor and mine came with a Radeon 1950 XTX vidcard, which is one of the top out there according to my research. You may want to check some of the dealers on Ebay.

Red,

Molitoth has a great build for you for half the price. And if you were ok with the price of the XPS just tell Mol to put in an 8800GTX, and then send him a bill for all the hard work.

Pricewatch.com is a great place to start looking on your own as said above with looking at barebones to start.

I know in the Vanguard thread I put the specs up for my rig, which is a dell XPS 710. But I didn't spec it or pay for it, my boss did on both accounts and then it was just given to me. If I had done it myself, it would have looked more like Molitoths proposed rig for you.

Well, I don't want to "build" it for him, but I don't like see'ing people getting ripped off if they are on a budget. When you go any large computer company, you are paying for so much shit that is not needed.

Why pay all of that money for Windows Vista???
-XP works fine and is a great OS
-Vista drivers are pure bullshit for most companies right now, most likely your video card won't work how it is intended to
-Its EXPENSIVE, you can get XP Pro for free off the internet. And don't gimme that BS about not being able to download updates. (just don't install the WGM
-It just looks nicer... You're prolly going to be spending most of the time on your OS with some APP, game, or Program taking up the entire screen.
---There are some perks to Vista, if you are worried about security, etc...

Why buy a new DVD rom??? Just use your old one...
-Don't! they all work the same
-Don't pay for lightscribe, unless you really plan on using it

Need a new keyboard and mouse??? prolly not, just clean your old ones!
-Dell and HP ARE charging you for these, and it is not the Wal-Mart generic version price.

If you have a full size tower already made by HP, IBM, or Dell then most likely it is a lot quieter then those stupid looking oversized alien head ones with glowing eyeballs and talking digital display. The lighting on those things will cause your neighbors to buy little eyepatches to help them sleep at night.... and the noise from all of those cheap little fans you have to constantly replace are louder then all the server racks in Sprints Data Center.

Point of story, if your on a budget.. ignore upgrading the bullshit.

And be sure to buy your software. Don't use illegal versions of the OS. You want free, get a linux distribution. Bootlegging copywritten software is illegal and can lead to arrest, fines and possibly imprisonment. If you use the software, buy the software. It's the bootleggers that keep the prices high for us all.

Awesome, thanks guys. You changed my mind totally about going with DELL. I talked with the last company that built my previous PC's and I sent them an email with all the stuff I needed. They are out of St Joseph and I've never had any problems with them or my PC's. The problem I have is this. I've had the same hard drive since the wheel was invented. Its a 40GB western Digital that I bought back in 99. My D: drive is an 8GB, also was my first hard drive. So theres alot of history..and I'm pretty sure a ton of problems with it. Meaning all the games that I have installed and didnt get rid of all the info when I uninstalled them, etc.

Over the last month or so my PC has been crapping out on me. For instance...the CPU fan or the heatsink fan is overheating the motherboard and causing the PC to shutdown. I cant even log on now because it goes straight to the BIOS section and asks if i want to run the CPU at 1250 or 1750. I've chosen both, I've turned the max temp on the MB up over 100 and it doesnt matter...i'll get tot he Windows XP loading screen and halfway through the desktop freezes and the monitor will shutdown.

That PC doesnt have a DVD drive, it has a CDrom thats 48X speed, and works occasionally. I press the button to open the tray and it clicks, and sounds like it wants to open, but doesnt. i have to press it a half a billion times and finally it will open. I've tried opening it up by going to my computer and selecting the drive and opening it from there, but its the same thing.

I used to download music, and I think that is where most of my problems came. Its been about 6 years since I did that, and since then I've always had the same damn bug. The recycle bin...no matter how many items i delete..when i empty the recycle bin, it keeps asking me "are you sure you want to delete these seven items" I could fill that thing up with hundreds of deleted items, but that same message comes up...and I never can see what I have deleted before.

Oh yeah, and the this is another turn. My wife..one day...was going through her hotmail on the pc. I get home, she left a note saying something is wrong with my pc. I log on, and theres a black square covering 3/4 of my screen, covering up icons, and when you run the cursor over this space, it disappears behind it. I call her and she says she logged into her hotmail, seen that she had won some tickets, clicked on this link and then she noticed that a red circle appeared down by the clock. She double clicked it and noticed "her pc has a virus" so she scanned the pc...and ended up with a strain of spysheriff. So that was fun removing it from the pc.

Shit like that over the years has taken its toll on the pc..and I think it just needs to be replaced. If anything ever caused me problems, all I would do is fix that item and upgrade it at the time. Just bandaging the PC as I went along. But I think you guys are right. I dont need vista. I bought windows XP awhile back and I'll just use that version or buy another. The box I currently have is still good. Its a Thermaltake, the one with the red flames that light up in the front. Should be able to use most of the hardwire cables inside the desktop, and the the huge fan that I paid extra for sitting ont he heatsink. I think its called the Tornado..I think. Everything else will have to be new. Harddrive, CPU, cd/dvd rom, video card, etc etc.

My wifes PC is also screwing up too. Did I mention I have bad luck with PCs? So we bought hers from Best Buy..yeah I know, I learned my lesson. It was in 2004. An EMachine. which at the moment is faster than my pc. Its running a 2.6, my old pc is idling at 1.3. both are AMD. Her emachine has a dvdrom/cdrom, nice 150gb harddrive, printer, nice monitor. The old klunker pc is running a 1999 NEC 19" monitor..great from its time, but like 8 years old and takes up alot of space. I'd also like to replace it with a flat screen.

Anyways, I restored her PC the other day...everything was great for a week or so. Then the day I get Mcaffee, I log on and head to Chiefsplanet...to catch up on things. Sure I click on a few links here and there from the girlie thread ...then all of a sudden my cdrom tray opens up on its own. And then it closes. I'm thinking..."SHIT htismaqe is hacking my PC" So I log off Chiefsplanet, and then the the cdrom opens again. Now this is before I installed any type of antivirus or protection. So I log off the net and I manually close the tray. Which didnt want to close may I add. I shutdown the pc and when I try to log on it wont work. The windows XP loading screen will appear and you can see it hitting my harddrive, and then the light on the harddrive stops and the screen freezes. I have to shut down the PC, press F8, and log in by safe mode with networking. I have ran spysweeper, adaware se, and hijackthis. those pick up nothing. So I'm not quite sure where to go from here on her pc, other than just to log on safemode for a few days until I get this new machine built...then try to restore it again.

So thats my situation...hope you enjoyed laughing at my pc's...cuz it still cracks me up how much I spend on them and most likely i'll be selling them in the next garage sale.
