Tynes vs. Peterson

I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm as interested in this competition as I am in about anything else in camp. I guess it's because I think it's imperative that we go into camp with the best possible kicker.

Here's the latest (7/31):

from kcchiefs.com: TRAINING CAMP NOTES: Both place kickers worked on their kickoffs and continually placed their kicks inside the five-yard line …

from uwrf tc site: Kickers Todd Peterson and Lawrence Tynes were busy practicing kickoffs. Peterson kicked eight out of his nine kickoffs into the end zone, while Tynes kicked seven out of eight into the end zone. Both kickers also kicked two field goals. Peterson was good from 42 yards but missed from 38 yards wide left. Tynes was good from 38 yards but missed right from 42 yards out.

I wonder how come peterson couldn't get 8 of 9 kickoffs in the end zone in game situations???

maybe the competition is a good thing...can't help but pull for Tynes though

I'm pulling for Tynes primarily because I have never felt comfortable with any Chiefs kicker since Nick left us.

Just a minor update, but Adam Teicher was on the radio yesterday afternoon, and he had an interesting thing or two to say about Tynes. Basically, he talked about how the kid wasn't just a training camp body and that he really has a legitimate shot at getting the job. He also said Tynes has a very strong leg and that he had good height on his kickoffs.

Kicker Todd Peterson showed off his leg today in practice, nailing field goals from 43, 48, and 53 yards out. Kicker Lawrence Tynes was good from 43 and 48, but well left from 53 yards out.

Peterson is one big ? anywhere outside of 35 yards IMO. He's nothing without a dome over his head.

RIVER FALLS, Wis. -- Funny thing about kickers: they're trying mightily to take each other's job one minute, then offering one another praise and encouragement the next.

Kansas City Chiefs veteran Todd Peterson has even been passing along tips to Lawrence Tynes, the strong-legged rookie trying to boot him onto the unemployment line.

"It's obviously kind of a double-edged sword," said Peterson. "You want to be a nice guy. You want to be a positive influence on the guy. But at the same time, this is my job. This is how I make my living and how I provide for my wife and children. You don't teach him everything. It's a little dues-paying process."

A seven-year veteran, Peterson kicked 15 of 20 field goals in eleven games after joining the Chiefs last season -- good numbers, but nothing flashy. He could be facing a formidable challenge from the Scottish-born Tynes, who wowed everybody in camp on Sunday when he nailed a 58-yarder but has not been consistent.

"I don't know if any rookies this year are going to start in the NFL," said Tynes. "But I hope I'm one of them."

Peterson and deep snapper Kendall Gammon were the only members of Kansas City's generally miserable special teams who performed up to par last year. They are also the only ones still around, being led by a new special teams coach, Frank Gansz Jr.

It was Gansz, son of former Chiefs head coach Frank Gansz Sr., who spotted Tynes at Troy State in Alabama and snapped him up immediately following the draft.

"We'll find out how he does when we start playing people and getting in the stadium," Gansz said. "But he is doing some good things. I like his attitude. I like his confidence. He showed me a lot of things when I worked him out in the spring. But again, we've got a ways to go."

At Troy State, Tynes was 45-of-62 while hitting all but four of 131 extra points during a four-year career. His senior season he set a school record with 45 field goals.

Peterson has the edge in NFL experience, however. He comes into the season ranked as the eighth-most accurate kicker in NFL history, with an 80.3 percentage. He hit nine of his last 10 kicks for the Chiefs last year.

He became available to the Chiefs when he was cut by Seattle following an injury.

"I never felt good until the very end of the season, and when I felt good, I kicked well," Peterson said.

So far in camp, Tynes has been dangerously inconsistent for an unproven rookie. He's had days when he could hardly miss and days when he could hardly hit.

"Todd has an advantage. He's been in the league for seven years. I think he can get away with missing some because he's established," he said. "He's one of the better kickers in the NFL. For me to win the job, I'm going to have to make every kick."

Head coach Dick Vermeil said that he would "rather not" go with a rookie as his place kicker.

"But it depends on the rookie," he said. "If we have an opportunity to upgrade our team at that position, we will."

If their field goal accuracy is about equal, the winner of the job may be the man with the longest kickoffs. Dismissed punter Todd Sauerbrun handled those duties last year, and not very well.

"We're neck-and-neck," Tynes said.

In this morning's practice, Peterson seemed to have the better of it in field goals while Tynes may have had an edge in length of kickoffs.

"One of us is going to have to do something better," Tynes said. "I don't know when they're going to make a decision on the kickers. Hopefully, I'll win the respect of my teammates and convince coach Vermeil that he can put a rookie on the field."

If kickoffs are the deciding factor, Peterson figures he'll not be the one out of work.

"I consider it a part of the game. I take great pride in it," he said.

"I'm not going to kick 40 touchbacks but I'm going to try to hit the ball consistent, with good hang time and good depth, and directionally once in awhile to keep teams off balance."

The team is looking forward to the much-needed day off tomorrow. With the injury list expanding by a player or two a practice, the players that are still healthy say they're sore and tired. Rookie kicker Lawrence Tynes even admits his leg doesn't have the same power behind the ball. "This is my first one (training camp), but I can speak for Dan (Stryzinski) and Todd (Peterson). We are tired, and my leg is losing its' pop. We have been kicking a lot. I just can't wait for tomorrow."

I would be shocked if Tynes wins the job.

Especially since Peterson seems to be kicking off into the end zone.

What I'd really like to know about is height of their kicks, hang time on KOs, etc.

How can we go from having terrible kicking one year, to two solid contenders the next?

They'll both be playing somewhere when the year's over, IMHO.

I'm not sure it wouldn't be a wiser long-term move to keep the rookie, because we really are in a rebuilding mode, even if it is a short term thing.

I, too, wish we had more info on their height, etc. Adam Teicher was on the radio a few days ago and I got the impression that he was really impressed with Tynes (he didn't even mention Peterson as I recall) saying his leg was powerful and that he was getting very good elevation on his kickoffs. That was the same day he said that Tynes wasn't just a training camp body, that he was brought in to compete for the job.

The coaches are looking to lower that stat this season as they are placing a higher emphasis on it in training camp. Last season departed punter Todd Sauerbrun shouldered the kickoff duties leaving the position vacant for someone to step up this training camp.

Each has consistently kicked the ball inside the five-yard line and putting it across the goal line and several kicks.
