Pats Suspend Glenn For Season

Terry Glenn just cost himself 11.5 million dollars by being a crybaby and skipping practice for the last two weeks due to "lack of support" from his team.

What a loser. To think I wanted KC to trade for this guy. Thank goodness I was wrong.
Patriots suspend Glenn, take back $11.5M bonus

SportsTicker

BOSTON -- Terry Glenn will not have to think about rejoining the New England Patriots this season. The decision apparently has been made for him.

The Boston Globe is reporting in its Wednesday's editions that the Patriots have suspended the troubled wide receiver for the entire season.

According to the newspaper, the Patriots informed Glenn's agent, Jim Gould, on Tuesday night that they were suspending his client without pay and placing him on the reserve list.

The Patriots also will take away Glenn's $11.5 million signing bonus, the Globe reported. If that is the case, Glenn must sit out the season and cannot be traded or released.

"They told us to stay home and that coach (Bill Belichick) will talk to Terry after the season is over," Gould told the newspaper. "Terry is devastated."

The Patriots' move came after Glenn decided to end his holdout and rejoin the team at training camp, the Globe reported.

Glenn bolted from training camp unexpectedly on Aug. 5 and the club threatened to suspend him for the season. It has been a tumultuous month for Glenn, who was suspended by the NFL for the first four games of the season for violating the league's substance abuse policy.

Glenn also had off-the-field problems during the offseason and originally was excused from camp to attend to personal problems.

In May, he was charged with assault and battery following a dispute with the mother of his 5-year-old son. The woman recanted the chrarges, but prosecutors are pursuing the case.

Glenn, 27, signed a six-year, $50 million contract extension last year, including the $11.5 million signing bonus. In June, the club witheld a $1 million payment on the bonus until he worked out personal problems.

Last season, Glenn caught 79 passes for 963 yards and six touchdowns while playing all 16 games for the first time in his career.

A 1996 first-round pick, Glenn has 315 career receptions for 4,465 yards and 21 TDs in 64 games with the Patriots. He set an NFL rookie record with 90 receptions but has missed 16 games in his career due to a broken ankle, pulled hamstring and team suspension.
Terry Glenn has some problems that need to be dealt with but punishing the man beyond reasonable means is too far. This is not the first time Belichick has had an ego driven problem with a player. Belichick is a pure grade A #1 A-Hole and until he learns to deal with the mentality of today's youth then he will continually maybe even annually have this problem with players. Belichick's idea of a leader are Do what I say and do it RIGHT NOW. don't question my authority because I am GOD!

Well T.Glenn will have the last laugh because Belichick is an awful HC that does not know how to delegate authority that will go 3-13 or 4-12 this year and be fired either before the seasons end or during the offseason before the 2002 season

Wow-

That's $150 million the Pats have tied up in two players--$50 mill for Glenn and $100 mill for Bledsoe. You'd think you'd want both of those guys on the field at the same time. No wonder they bring up the basement in the AFCE.

No offense intended, but most of today’s youth need a swift kick in the *ss. They think the world evolves around them and that the rest of the world owes them. Bull crap! If I acted like Glen my boss would have fired me months ago.

Good! If more teams played hardball with these multimillionare spoiled brats, the NFL wouldn't have nearly the discipline problems it has experienced the past several years. These rich children need to realize they are NOT bigger than the game. NOBODY is.

I'll bet his agent is ****ting bricks...sounds like he was trying to get Glenn to show anyway...cost him a pretty penny in commissions...poor guy, he's also Korey Stringer's agent....

This situation sucks all around...from what I've read there are no good guys....Glenn is a spoiled brat, Gould is an agent, need I say more...Belichik is an ******* and Kraft is a greedy owner...

**** em all....

Joe,
I'm betting that the agent doesn't get bent over like you might think. He negotiated a good deal for Glenn and it's not his problem that he couldn't keep his nose clean. I'll bet the agent covered his *** in anticipation of Glenn's character problems. He's also been paid for Stringer's contract out of his signing bonus. He's not hurting in any way, but he does look kinda bad for not being able to "control" or advise Glenn better.

Okay so it may cost him some future revenues...I couldn't care less, I have about as much compassion for agents as I do for attorneys and child abusers....

The only agent I like is ARLI$$.....:)

Let's not be too hasty on blasting Glenn. While I don't agree with how he has handled the situation, the Patriots are not without fault. It seems that they have shown very little support for Glenn during this drug situation, made alot of negative public comments about him during the offseason and may have violated the NFL's confidentiality agreement regarding the drug program.

I agree with Cooter that they are being extremely harsh, especially since he was planning on coming in for a sit down (note the Soprano's reference.)

Let's not forget that he was also charged with assault on the mother of his child...not exactly an upstanding citizen...however, I don't blame him totally, this sounds like everyone involved are begin aholes....

How can you just not pay a player? Withholding a bonus? How does all of this affect the cap? Could we have "withheld" Chet's or Grby's money? Just curious.

Pitt,

He had behavioral clauses in his contract allowing the Pats to withhold and recover the bonus if he committed a crime above DUI or was suspended over the NFL's substance abuse policy.

No, we couldn't do that with anyone unless we had similar clauses in their contracts. I'm thinking that will become a standard in the future.....
