Q&A with BRODIE CROYLE - 9/4
Sep 04, 2008, 4:33:35 PM

Q: Are you ready for this?

BRODIE CROYLE: “We want to play some games that count and see where we’re at. We have a good first test, and we’re excited about it.”

Q: What does being the Opening Day starter mean to you as opposed to a year ago?

CROYLE: “I’ve had a lot more time to get used to the guys. A lot more time to get used to the position. I feel a lot more comfortable. We had a great training camp, so hopefully we’ll be able to translate that over into a good season.”

Q: How comfortable are you with this new offense?

CROYLE: “We really never got to completely do everything in the preseason. It was like we were kind of working on things. It’s fun to just kind of tie it all together and have a game plan. We feel good about our game plan we’re ready to get out there and go.”

Q: How do you feel that nobody’s giving you a chance?

CROYLE: “That’s expected. Nobody really expects us to do much. The Patriots are supposed to go out there and be World Champions. We’re going out there to win, and we’ll see what happens.”

Q: How does it make you feel that expectations aren’t too high for the Chiefs?

CROYLE: “It’s fine with us. We’re confident in ourselves, we feel good about where we’re at. It’s kind of a good spot to be in. Nobody expects that much from us. We’re just going to go out there and win the football game and prove them wrong.”

Q: How does T Branden Albert look?

CROYLE: “He’s actually been really good the first two days. He’s moving around well and he’s going to be something special before it’s all said and done. It’s good to have him back out there. He’s a good guy to have back in the huddle. He’s kind of a light-hearted good mood guy, so it’s fun to have him back.”

Q: Is it comforting to know that RB Larry Johnson is back?

CROYLE: “It is. I think Larry is a great back, it’s great to have him back. It’s my first chance to really play with him, so I’m excited about it. We’ve got all our guns, so we’re going to go out there and do what we do.”

Q: How much of the offense have you been able to master?

CROYLE: “I feel comfortable with anything we call. The good thing about this offense is, we can go back to the stuff we ran in OTAs and call it, and people will understand it because it’s all concepts. Last year, in a different type of offense, you have to get used to calling it. The different formations and different type of number systems. With this we can go in at halftime if something isn’t working, and totally change it. That’s what makes this offense so good.”

Q: How much freedom will you have this year to change plays as opposed to last year?

CROYLE: “Last year we didn’t have any checks. With all the shifting, moving, a lot of things would go with that. They just expect that you can beat the guy across from you. It’s obviously got its place, that offense has been very successful, but for us, this is a better offense.”

Q: Is it more like what you ran at Alabama?

CROYLE: “It is. It’s actually kind of a combination. We’ve run the same terminology that we had last year, with the numbering systems and that style of offense. But the same concepts and the same styles of calls, it’s a lot like what we ran at Alabama. Coach (Mike) Shula was quarterbacks coach under (offensive coordinator) Chan (Gailey).”

Q: Do you know how many checks you’ll have in an average 60-play game?

CROYLE: “It really depends on the team. There are a lot of teams that you have a lot of checks with that could have a bunch of different fronts. Then you’ll have teams that they might run the same thing basically all the time and you might have only one or two checks per game. So it really depends. There were some preseason games where we had a lot and some where we didn’t. This game is no different.”

Q: Can you tell the Chiefs’ Kingdom what to evaluate about the Patriots defense?

CROYLE: “They look good. Obviously. I played (LB Jerod) Mayo in college and he’s one of the faster guys that we played. Obviously (LB Tedy) Bruschi and (LB) Adalius Thomas and (LB Mike) Vrabel are big names in the NFL. It’s going to be a good test for us. They count on getting pressure on you with their front seven, that’s probably going to be their game plan.”

Q: Do you feel more confident about yourself this season?

CROYLE: “A lot of different things went on last year. The great thing about it is, it’s last year. We have a new year, new offense and we’re in a new position.”

Q: Are you excited for your chance to end your winless start streak?

CROYLE: “You guys make a bigger deal out of that that I do. When it happens, it’ll happen. It will be just like any other win. We’re not going to have a big confetti thing or anything. It’ll be fun to win a game, but there won’t be a big party or anything.”

Q: How much easier is your job with a healthy Larry Johnson in the backfield?

CROYLE: “Having him back is huge for us. He’s one of the best backs in the league and we’re counting on him to have a big year. Things have been kind of geared around him to have a big year, so the rest of us are counting on him big time too.”

Q: How much more this week are we going to see than in the preseason?

CROYLE: “You’ll see a lot of new stuff. We ran a lot of the same stuff in the preseason, game after game. That’s usually what most people do. I’d say 60-70 percent of teams don’t like to show a lot in the preseason. We were one of those teams. You can only run so many different variations of different plays. I’m sure the Patriots have seen every one of them, it’s just a matter of execution.”

Q: How are you going to utilize WR Dwayne Bowe?

CROYLE: “Obviously we have to get him the ball. He’s our go-to guy. We’ve got special stuff to get him the ball and we’re going to make sure to get it to him. At the same time, if they double him, if they roll coverage to him, or whatever, that will leave (WR Jeff) Webb and (WR Devard) Darling one-on-one. If he gets ten balls, if he gets two balls, as long as we win, I think he’ll be happy.”

Wow, these are such worthless interviews.

Q: What do you think of chocolate ice cream?

CROYLE: Oh, I think it's great. It's a classic flavor, you know and I'm just happy every time I can grab a bowl of it.

Ephesians 2:8-10

English Standard Version (ESV)

8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, 9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast. 10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
