My Final Mock Draft of 2009
Friday April 24th 2009 3:45 am First Time Poster here, but have lurked here for many years. You guys have a great and respectable message board. I have made about 6 different mock drafts and barring any last minute trades this is it for me. I can’t wait for the draft tomorrow, to see how things really play out. It has been fun trying to figure out who will go where and weeding out the smoke screens. I hope all of you enjoy the draft as much as I will. 1 Lions QB Matt Stafford Georgia Stafford is a very good quarterback. Just like any quarterback, he will only do well if the Lions surround him with talented players, who can protect him. They must improve their offensive line, especially at left tackle and also give him a running game that will limit his weaknesses of learning on the job. If they do this right and bring him along correctly then he will do great. There is no doubt he has the arm strength to make every NFL pass. 2 Rams OT Jason Smith Baylor Jason Smith is the best offensive lineman in this draft. The Rams need a lot of help, but clearly Smith is the best player on the board plus he fills a need. He will start at left tackle on day one. 3 Chiefs OLB Aaron Curry Wake Forest Aaron Curry is the best linebacker in this draft. Not too often do you have a chance to draft a player of this caliber. He will be a star, especially in the 3-4. He will start on day one. 4 Seahawks OT Eugene Monroe Virginia After all the smoke clears and the dust settles, Monroe will be the guy in Seattle. A lot of people have the Seahawks taking Mark Sanchez here, but that is just draft talk filling. The Seahawks have always taken great pride in their offensive line and until they do anything different I am going to assume this is how their board is laid out. Monroe may start at left tackle or right tackle, but it will not take him long, maybe a year, maybe even less before he becomes the starting left tackle for the Seattle Seahawks. 5 Browns WR Michael Crabtree Texas Tech I am ninety percent sure the Browns are going to trade Braylon Edwards to the New York Giants. Anyone who has seen Crabtree play knows the Browns can not pass on this very talented possession receiver. 6 Bengals OT Andre Smith Alabama The Bengals biggest need is to protect Carson Palmer. If they can't protect Palmer then nothing else matters. A receiver doesn't help if Palmer is on his back. A defensive player doesn't help if the offense can't move the chains. If Smith gives his all then he will be a great player. The Bengals do not pick again until #38 and do not have time for a project at left tackle. They need a day one starter. 7 Raiders WR Jeremy Maclin Missouri Maclin is a game changer and although he doesn't bring the great speed, he is dynamite with the ball in his hands. If the Raiders can find a way to get him the ball then he will be a very exciting player for many years. 8 Jaguars NT BJ Raji Boston College Don't let the off field issues a few years ago fool you into believing the hype that Raji is falling in this draft. Raji is an A+ grade DT, who can also play NT in a 3-4. He is the cream of this crop of defensive tackles in this year’s draft, and he falls to the Jaguars biggest need. 9 Packers DE/LB Brian Orakpo Texas Orakpo is a great fit for the Packers. Orakpo has the athletic ability to play defensive end in the 4-3 and also outside linebacker in the 3-4. 10 49ers DE/LB Aaron Maybin Penn St Maybin can play defensive end in the 4-3 and outside linebacker in the 3-4. He brings to the table what the 49ers have been lacking, in getting after the quarterback. I know what some of you who have seen my mocks are thinking. Where is Sanchez, right? I have had him here for a few weeks now. Well I will explain that later. 11 Bills DE/DT Tyson Jackson LSU Tyson is one of the most versatile players in this draft and I wouldn't be surprised if he goes as high as #5 to Cleveland. This is the quality of player that you can build just about any style of defense around. 12 Broncos DE/LB Robert Ayers Tennessee Robert Ayers started his career at Tennessee as a 250 pound linebacker and bulked up to become a dominant defensive end in college. Ayers has no history of injuries. He started out at Tennessee as a “know it all” and you couldn't teach him anything, but over his college career he has become fascinated with learning about football. 13 Redskins QB Mark Sanchez USC Don't ask me how they are going to pull this off. They are going to find a way to trade up in front of San Francisco and get him. If they don't then Sanchez is a 49er. The problem is the Redskins can't let that happen. They have pissed off their current quarterback and he wants out. The Redskins will have very few choices if they don't find a way to draft Sanchez. Todd Collins will be his mentor. Dan Snyder has found a new way to put all of his eggs in one basket. 14 Saints RB Chris Wells Ohio St Many will say that the Saints need defense here. However this is the best defensive player they can pick. The Saints need a big back to help sustain long drives and keep their defense off the field. The change of pace between Wells and Bush will be entertaining. 15 Texans CB Malcolm Jenkins Ohio St Malcolm can play CB or Safety and both are big needs for the Texans. The Texans have a good defense but need to cover ability that Jenkins brings to the table. 16 Chargers ILB Rey Maualuga USC The Chargers could do whatever they want with this pick. They are a very well put together team. The fans will be screaming for Moreno, but the team has always built from the defense. 17 Jets WR Darrius Heyward-Bey Maryland Darrius is the fastest receiver in this draft and was even clocked at 4.27 back in 2006. Do you think that will spread the field for the Jets? Some people want Josh Freeman here, however he would be a one or two year project. And unless he can catch footballs like Darrius then I am not sure what he can do that the other quarterbacks on the team can't do in 2009. 18 Broncos (Chi) OLB Brian Cushing USC The Broncos will be going all out hybrid this year. They will play some 3-4 and some 4-3. They need a lot of players in the front seven to pull this off. Their first two picks are a great start. Cushing can play inside in the 3-4, as well as outside in the 4-3. This defense could be fun to watch. How long has it been since we could say that about Denver? 19 Buccaneers QB Josh Freeman Kansas St Leftwich’s deal is setup the way it is for one reason only. The Bucs intend on drafting a quarterback. Freeman will take a year or two of developing to be NFL ready. 20 Lions (Dal ) OT Michael Oher Ole Miss If you are going to draft a quarterback with the first pick in the draft then you had better spend the rest of the draft making sure he is protected. 21 Eagles RB Knowshon Moreno Georgia I think everyone can clearly see that Moreno is the pick if he falls to the Eagles. Westbrook and Moreno will be a great one-two punch. 22 Vikings OT Eben Britton Arizona Best tackle on the board and the Vikings can not get out of this draft without a good tackle, who can play on day one. 23 Patriots DE/LB Everette Brown Florida St Bill loves hybrid linebackers and he will love this seeing Everette fall to him. 24 Falcons DE/DT Peria Jerry Ole Miss This is the pick that sends pains through every Colts fan around the world. Until the Tony Gonzalez trade it was looking possible that Jerry would fall. Look out for the Falcons in 2009 because they will be serious contenders. 25 Dolphins DE/LB Larry English Northern Illinois The Dolphins need corners but they won't reach into the second round to fill the need. They will not draft Vontae Davis here because he is too small for Bill Parcells and his off field issues will be the icing on the cake. The bigger corners or tweeners will be there later. 26 Ravens TE Brandon Pettigrew Oklahoma St This is going to be one of the best picks in the entire draft. Brandon Pettigrew will instantly bring the Ravens running game back to life. On a side note, if he does fall past the Ravens then he will not fall past the Colts. I know that will sound surprising to some, but there is no way the Colts could pass on Pettigrew and what he would do to improve their running game. The Colts would love to get back to their hybrid two tight end set with Dallas Clark in the slot. 27 Colts DE/DT Evander "Ziggy" Hood Missouri The Colts need a DT more than anyone else in the league and they have needed one for years. They finally get a quality defensive tackle, who is too good to pass on in the first round. 28 Bills (Phi) OT William Beatty UConn In the end, the Bills beat Jason Peters. They got rid of the disgruntled Peters, who demanded more money after giving up 11 1/2 sacks last year. Beatty will also cost them much less. 29 Cleveland (NYG) DE/LB Clay Matthews USC The Giants trade the 29th pick in the draft to Cleveland for Braylon Edwards and select a quality linebacker in Clay Matthews. 30 Titans WR Percy Harvin Florida Jeff Fisher desperately wants to open up the vertical passing game. If the can't trade this pick for Anquan Boldin then they will draft the speedy receiver and take their chances. 31 Cardinals RB Donald Brown UConn I didn't see Edgerrin coming back to Arizona before the sad news we heard a few days ago about his longtime girlfriend passing away. Edgerrin may even decide to retire. He has always said that he plays the game to take care of the people around him and his kids need him more than ever now. Edgerrin is a good man and will do what is best for his family. When it’s all said and done, Donald Brown could end up being the best runningback in this draft. 32 Steelers CB Darius Butler UConn Butler's 4.4 speed and ball hawking skills will land him in the nickel on day one. It won't be long before he is an everyday starter. |

My predictions:
1. If the Lions were smart they'd give the #20 and a third to Cleveland for Brady Quinn and grab a LOT or Curry with the first pick. 2. Matthews will be the first of the USC linebackers off the board. 3. Loadholt will go a lot earlier than people think. 4. Brady Quinn will be traded. 5. Vontae Davis slides. 6. A big run on OT's in the first round causes a lot of WR's to drop into the 2nd. 7. E. Brown slides past 20. 8. Delmas goes in the top 35.

Kiper finally snaps and stabs McShay in his McEye with a pen.
