Browns claim Patriots castoff on waivers

Posted by Mike Florio on January 1, 2010 5:53 PM ET

Perhaps as part of his ongoing effort to convince the rest of the the world that his 4-11 team bears similarities to the franchise that won three Super Bowls in four seasons during the last decade, Browns coach Eric Mangini has claimed on waivers a player dumped by the Patriots.

The team announced that is has been awarded defensive lineman Titus Adams, who recently was released by the Pats.

Adams had been on the Patriots' practice squad since 2008, and he was elevated to the active roster on December 9.

ESPNBoston.com pointed out recently that the Browns had tried to sign four different players from the eight-man New England practice squad to the Cleveland active roster, and that the players each declined. After being moved to the active roster and then released, Adams could not refuse to join the Browns, who have acquired his rights via the league's waiver system.

The browns didn't miss out on much.If they would rather not play in NE than actually get playing time in cleveland I doubt they would be much help.

I don't see a whole lot of savvy in turning down a chance to get on an active roster, unless maybe you think it's better to stay with one team if you think Cleveland will just cut you after the next game. And actually, I guess that's quite possible.

Titus Adams was actually pretty damn good in preseason. I'm surprised the Pats dumped him. He probably walks into Cleveland and is better than half of their starters.

I'm not sure how it works this late in the season, but if the Browns tried earlier, say the 10 or 11th week, any player they signed off another team's practice squad has to remain on thier active roster for a minimum of three games.

You have to be on the claiming team's active roster for 3 weeks minimum, as Milkman pointed out. Furthermore, the Patriots pay their practice players a lot of money, and they actually promoted Arrington to keep him away from the Browns. New England had picked him up after Tampa Bay cut hm. He's been doing great on special teams. New England shuffles players on and off the practice squad a fair amount, so the players get their opportunities to play for the big squad.
