Peter King, Adam Schefter on Weis, Crennel (WEEI)

King:

Quote:
Explain the Charlie Weis-Romeo Crennel in Kansas City and the non-firing in Cleveland.

In Kansas City I think there was a lot of thought that this was a Scott Pioli hire. But when Pioli hired Todd Haley, look the coaching staff is yours, I want to know who you are hiring but you have to work with the guy everday, I don’t. You have to make a call with conviction, so you want a guy you can have him. So this was Todd Haley’s hire, and one of the reasons is when Charlie Weis was an assistant with the Jets, Bill Parcells told him one day, “Hey listen, I’m putting this kid in your office Todd Haley, Dick Haley’s son and he’s going to try to learn the ropes and maybe be a quality control guy, blah blah blah.” So for three years Todd Haley had a desk in Charlie Weis’ office at Hofstra. Bill Belichick I’m sure remembers this because he was there. That’s how Todd Haley broke into the NFL being taken up the wing of Charlie Weis. So when he had the opportunity to hire somebody who he knew that he could have arguments with, could fight with and have good fruitful discussions on how to work on offense, his first guy that he was interested in was Charlie Weis. Now, I was kind of surprised. I thought what was going to happen was that John Fox was going to leave Carolina and go somewhere and that John Fox would hire Charlie because John and Charlie have gotten to be fairly close. But, it didn’t happen because I believe John Fox is going to stay in Carolina, and I think this was (Weis’) best opportunity to take Matt Cassel and teach him the same way he taught Tom Brady.
Schefter:
Quote:
Is it signed-sealed-and delivered with Romeo Crennel and Charlie Weis in Kansas City?

Weis will be signed-sealed-delivered, and Romeo, again as was told to me last week and as I said, he’s going to coach next year, and I think that Kansas City is the likely landing spot.

So it’s not a done deal yet?

Not a done deal. Not a done deal. I ultimately think that that’s where he will wind up, but it’s definitely not done. Who knows the Giants could swoop in and hire him as defensive coordinator or maybe some other team comes along. But, I’m told it will either be KC or the Giants. I think Romeo wants to be around his friends, and he has a lot of friends in Kansas City, and ultimately that would be my feeling as to where he ends up.

Do most people think the Crennel-Weis reunion is a good thing?

I think that they look at both coaches, and we know that Charlie Weis should help that offense. They need somebody to take hold of that offense, lead it forward, be involved in the play-calling, take charge of the play-calling, and help groom Matt Cassel in much the same way that Charlie Weis groomed Tom Brady. So, I don’t see how it could be a bad thing. Same thing with Romeo Crennel. I think they are looking for a little direction with their defense and Romeo Crennel would be the guy to provide it.

Unfortunately the Chiefs have squandered any opportunity they have had to make it to the Superbowl so a much more successful organization has been brought in to make that happen. I dislike the references to the Patriots as well but what I dislike more is having a team of complete misfits that couldn't beat a college team.

I've finally decided that I, myself, could be a sports writer. I mean, you really don't have to know anything ... all you have to do is pile a bunch of speculation on top of some conjecture then jam all that into a big tub of supposition and guesswork.

I think I could do that.

That's only part of it. You'll also need to invest in one big ass dart board. Or multiple dart boards if you choose to cover other sports.

It appears that we're commited to the 3-4 and that will be a key factor on next year's DC. Is there anyone out there with a better 3-4 resume than Crennel? If so, hire him. If not, hire Crennel. Just get it the hell done, please. [Pendergast should NOT return as DC. That I do know.]

The only way that happens is if you win and win a lot.

You don't win it all, no one talks about you.

You don't win, you fire one regime and hire another regime, and have to hear about the new regime's background for the first few years, be it Cleveland, St. Louis, Tampa, the Philadelphia Stars, or whatever it is.

Actually, the Chiefs did hire two of their "own" during the Carl era, Herm and Gunther, and neither went well. I'm just thankful we went outside the Carl/Marty ties for once. May not work out either, but worth a shot...

I think to make it big though you have to get an inside source from somewhere. This so you can break a few stories right before they happen.
