Bill Hicks, George Carlin, Mitch Hedberg, Pryor & other funny ones who've passed on.

I love Bill Hicks. He is my favorite all time comedian. Carlin, Pryor and Hedberg are up there, as well.

All of the good ones, are dead, it seems... yet Carlos Mencia and Dane Cook are perfectly healthy.

Here is a set by Bill Hicks that David Letterman banned from his show about 16 years ago. I'd never seen this set until moments ago. Solid stuff.

Feel free to post some of the funniest bits from your favorite comedians that are no longer with us. We could all use a laugh, right?

Hicks was a brilliant political satirist and way ahead of his time. If he had lived, I could easily see him on the Daily Show, much the same role that Lewis Black has now.

Carlin was a master of wordplay. His vocabulary skills were unreal.

Pryor was supposed to be Sheriff Bart in Blazing Saddles, but the studios were afraid to cast him. He ended up writing many of the funnies bits in the movie with Mel Brooks.

Hedberg was a great observational comic, and had a funky delivery. It was his own unique style, much like Stephen Wright has his own unique deadpan style.

I personally miss Rodney Dangerfield. He had a great life, and IMHO, was the greatest standup to ever live.

Greg Giraldo was good, but not in the class with these guys.

I loved Hedberg's delivery; he was one of my favorites.

My problem with Hicks was never his politics. It's that he was so damn dark. I understand that you have a message and I am well aware that it's not a perfect world - but I have a hard time with comedians that take everything so seriously and are so prone to going into some pretty sinister places.

I don't think he'd have been Jon Stewart. I see him becoming more like Bill Maher. Maher was funny at one point in his career, but now he's just kind of a bloviating shithead that takes himself entirely too seriously.

I loved the older Carlin. Was just looking at his old sets the other day.

I think Pryor's fairly overrated myself. His best bits are great; I don't recall the name of the special after he set himself on fire, but it was brilliant. Unfortunately, the vast majority of his bits are just saying "pussy" a lot and being crass for the sake of being crass. It's not funny, it's just vulgar. Dane Cook tries to pass off talking fast and loud as being funny - well Pryor was often content with passing off cussing and using exaggerated inflection as comedy.

I love Carlin, I like Kennison, but Pryor just grates on me because it's just the same thing over and over again.

Everyone's different w/ comedy, I certainly won't begrudge anyone for not liking Hedberg.

I remember watching Hicks' performance on Dangerfield's show and thinking how different he was from the others. IIRC, Robert Schimmel (RIP), Dice Clay and a few others that went to become "famous" were on that same show.

Hell, a lot of people like Cook and Mencia. Those guys were funny for all of 2 minutes. To each his own.
My current favorites are: Daniel Tosh, Louis CK, and Mike Birbiglia.
