To those with run with your dog:

I have two dogs: a shetland sheepdog and a boxer.

The sheltie runs for shit. She's just not interested in long distance runs, and I can't take her outside in the dead heat anyway.

The boxer runs perfectly fine with me, but can't go out in the dead heat (and our summers are getting hotter and hotter) or the middle of the winter (also getting longer and longer).

I'll be in the market for a dog real soon, so I'm wondering: what's a good dog to go running with that I can run with 12 months a year? Summer, winter, whenever. And I'm looking for a dog that can stay on my hip the entire time, just like the boxer.

Thanks in advance.

Using the dog breed selector found here:

http://www.showdog.com/breeds/breedselector.aspx

And selecting for high levels and high importance for energy, excersize requirements, trainability, and heat and cold tolerance, the following list of dogs was generated:

Australian Heeler - (otherwise known as #5 on cdcox's list)

Not really bothered by heat or cold, love to run, and extremely intelligent. That dog would truck with me anywhere I went. Best dog ever.

i see people at my apartment complex running with a border collie; and another runs with a german shepard.

no idea if they're 'good running dogs' though. I see them all them time though.

I have a doberman and a lab and both do well on long runs. The doberman is bullet proof for running.

You seem like a pocket dog kinda person to me.

That way, fifi can ride in your purse when you run, rain or shine without getting tired.

My parents live in North Dakota. Their German Shepherd can't stand the summers and is fairly worthless, but he loves winters. He'll run all day when it's 20 below 0 outside and won't be fazed by ice, snow, wind.

You can call it a satchel if it makes you feel more like Indiana Jones.

The Aussie Healer is going to be a territorial dog...protective and bite risk for things like kids riding bikes by it.

Border Collies are herding dogs, so they're built for running.....a lot. And they're very friendly.

I bet if you gave 'em a tight cut a few times in the summer, an Australian Shepherd would be perfect.

My parents' Aussie will chase a Kong disc for hours in the 95 degree heat even though he's got full-length hair.

Tons of energy, smart, and funny. Get one!
