Heading to the Rockies to fly fish...

I'm heading out Sunday and the reports indicate the fishing is great.

I've spent all day getting my gear in order and looking at line/tippets/leaders to see if all is good. It is.

The match the hatch report gives me an idea, but I never use those recommendations exactly. A very slight twist is always better.

We'll mostly be fishing streams that have substantial pools, but good running water.

My Godson will be learning the subtleties of this great sport. He's 11.

I have hoppers. We've had incredible success using terrestrials and there's a specific scud that's a killer, too. Actually, we fish in an area below an Alluvial fan near Rocky Mountain National Park. The locals say it sucks, but we slay 'em. Local knowledge is good and bad at the same time.

A Pink Scud?
Do you tie on a dropper bellow the terrestrials?

God it sounds like fun.
I have to wait till September. We will be heading to the Miracle Mile.

Terrestrials have to be top-water where we fish. Fast running water to a calm pool. Flip to the running water (over and over) and let it run to calm water.

Scuds work really well, too. A weighted scud that gets no more that a couple of feet below the water works well. Where we fish a blue/green color combination scud works.

I've been using a fly and a bobber. Works great.

I was talking about a Hopper/Dropper set up.
Dry or Terrestrial on top, with dropper (nymph, scud, etc) down low.
Killer set up.

We haven't heard much about your fishing escapades since you first asked for advice. Glad to hear you're having success.

Yeah, it's been a lot of fun. They like little chunks of bagels, too, which is interesting. I've also enjoyed acting as the lake warden, too.

I understand what you're doing. Where we fish we don't have that convenience. Very small areas in winding streams, but tons of fish. Think of it as flipping at 3 O'clock and fish hitting at noon or 11:00.

Or go really crazy with the Rocky Mountain hopper/copper/dropper by putting a copper John on there in between.
