History of Chiefs Starting QBs

Here's the laundry list of all the players who have started a game at QB for the Chiefs.

List includes only on true HOF guy who spent his prime with the Chiefs (Dawson), two other eventual HOF guys who spent their prime with other teams (Montana and Moon) a shitload of journeymen (DeBerg, Green, Bono, Grbac, etc.) and a bunch of stiffs (Fuller, Thigpen, Palko).

Just reading it kind of pisses me off. Has any other team been worse at QB since 1975? Maybe Cleveland or Detroit. That's all I can think of.

() shows number of games started during the season, season went to 16 games in 1978:

75 year old Moon started a game for us? I remember him backing up, but don’t remember the game. Anything memorable?

75-85 is painful

07-12 has been bad and will be just as bad if we don't make a move on Matt ASAP

and when I say "move" I mean excommunication.

Pretty sure that was @ SD when Grbac's pinky hurt.

IIRC, Moon had one of the worst displays of QBing I've ever seen. And we would've won the game had we just competent QBing.

Who do you old timers hate more: Bill Kenney or Matt Cassel?

From what I have read they could be practically indistinguishable.

Yep, we lost 17-16 to a previously winless Chargers team.

Moon was 12 of 31 for 130 yards, no TDs, one INT.

SD had five turnovers and won.

One more Pro Bowl for Cassell and he'll be tied with the franchise lead.

I had this conversation with a couple of my "Old Timer" Chiefs pals driving to Mizzou over the weekend.

This was our take:

1) In Kenney's corner: He was a Mr. Irrelevant. So nobody expected much of him when he came in. You can argue he over achieved for who he was. During most of his years, the Chiefs were mediocre. Not God Awful, but mediocre. Usually they'd finish anywhere from 6-10 to 8-8. They'd usually go zero for October, then as soon as they were mathematically eliminated from playoff contention, go on a tear and win just enough to assure a middle of the pack draft pick -and perpetuate their cycle of mediocrity. Kenney has a notoriously bad offensive line for most of his Chiefs career.

2) In Cassel's corner: He was basically a career backup in college and in the NFL before he came here. Things were expected of him, however, when Pioli paid him $60 mill to come here from New England. Cassel's had five different OCs and two different HCs in four years, so the "system" he plays in changes like dirty underwear. Cassel's had a notoriously bad offensive line for most of his time here.

Injury:

1) Kenney was, without a doubt, the toughest woman to ever play in the NFL. She suffered "neck burners" bruised thumbs, and severe cramps on several occasions. In one game during the 1980s my friends and I begged him to take some Midol at halftime, if anything to help improve his moodiness. In his nine years as Chiefs QB, he only played in all 16 games once.

2) Cassel is not a pussy. He's come back early and played with a bad knee, and came back a week after abdominal surgery to beat St. Louis two years ago. He is not afraid to run for a first down, he just can't think and run at the same time. He has no improvisational skill at all.

Where they are exactly the same:

Both are masters of the five yard pass on third and eight. Both talk a good game about being a "team leader," but neither guy is universally respected by their team mates. Both guys went over and sat all alone, or with the QB coach looking at series pictures between possessions, and had very little contact or discussion with offensive team mates between series. Neither guy could put a team on their back and will it to win when behind.

Neither one has won a playoff game.

Well, Dawson started most of the games when he was in his prime, and you have to remember, QBs weren't treated like ballerinas back in those days.
