The Language Of The Road

One of my favorite things is driving cross country. It's so peaceful and something I must do from time to time. Just me, music, snacks, weed, my fellow travelers, and the language of the road. I eat what I want, when I want and piss in some pretty shady shitters. And always a Suzie-Q. That's just tradition.

It's great to group up with fellow travelers and create a convoy, with cars taking turns leading the pack. An unspoken rule. When someone needs to exit, they always flash their lights to say thanks and safe travels.

If I have to pass a Trucker on his right, I'll flash my lights to let him know I'm coming through. Heck, I do it on his left too. I'm sure they appreciate it.

When a truck is passing me, I flash my lights on/off when his trailer is clear. Always cool getting that on/off returned.

Always. Always. Always. If a guy comes up behind me, I pull over and let him pass. Always. Then I'll match speed. New travel buddy.

If I have to squeeze in, or do something foolish, you will always see me stick my arm out of the car with a piece sign, a wave or devil horns to acknowledge it or to say thanks.

What are some other examples of the language of the road?

I prefer to drive all night and always take the time to check out the stars out in the middle of the desert. Stunning.

I run at 9 mph over posted speed (highway) and have had Patrolmen come up on me and run my plates, then blow past. Sometimes flashing their lights at me on the way by. One shined his spotlight at me as he went by. I do flash my headlights on/off and we both go our separate ways.

I dunno. I love it.

Save that piss for the radiator if she springs a leak in the desert.

Love road trips. Alas, since kids about my only roadies anymore are in the family truckster back and forth to San Diego Once in a while I'll get a Vegas in but, as you know, that's not really a wide open drive. Pretty, though. I think my most memorable was(clearly wish the circumstances were different)in September of 2011.

I was living in GA at the time and was helping a friend of mine move to Phoenix. As in, I was driving her car to PHX and then I was to fly back. We heard the broadcast of the 2nd plane hitting the tower while getting gas somewhere in Louisiana. We got to PHX ok but there was no way I was boarding a plane on 9/13. Only rental available in the state of Arizona was a uhaul. I bought an American Flag and affixed it to that truck and on 9/13 2011, I drove from Arizona back to Georgia, by myself. What I witnessed I will never, ever forget. American flags flew everywhere, strangers hugging and shaking hands at gas stations and diners, homemade signs posted along the highways and back roads, so many honks and waves. It was so sad yet so hopeful at the same time. I didn't even totally get the gravity, at age 23, that I do now. It's one of the most meaningful events of my life.

Man I miss long road trips.

Don't forget about tapping your foot in the end stall and rest stops. You'll meet some really nice fellers that way.

There is something to be said for the language I use when Billy Bigrigger is in the left lane going 1mph faster than Bubba Bigrigger is going in the right lane and I'm sitting there watching the big truck race for the next 27 miles.

I occasionally set new personal bests.

Don't leave your fog lights on while parked in a truck stop, unless you're looking for a little same sex companionship, nttiawwt.

My favorite family vacations were driving trips where we stopped at interesting places along the way. Much better than flying to a beach somewhere and spending a week with sand in my shoes.

I'd rather have a foghorn and curb feelers than fog lights, but that's just the kind of sob I am.

Ah The ol 63MPH drag race. Lots of trucks are governed, then you get two that drag race and its brutal. Idiots on both parts. The passer should recognize he doesn't have the juice to pass, and the passee should let off the gas and let the dickhead over.

You should hear the CB crackle when that shit happens. Some funny shit. Imagine if CP were a CB.....it's like that.

I think this is creepy as ****. If I come up behind someone and they pull over and then pull in behind me and start following me, I'm going to think they're up to no good.

You'd be surprised how many people do that, especially at night. It's like they need someone to follow because they're 85% asleep behind the wheel. And yes, it can be creepy.
