Alex Smith will be 33 years old by the time the 2017 season starts, and he is one concussion away from electing to retire. The Chiefs need a young and talented QB to be next in line. Mitch Trubisky has first round talent, but lacks seasoning. He will need to absorb the Andy Reid playbook on the sideline, and fine-tune his skills until his time to step in. Smith and Reid will be great people to learn from, and Trubs has a heck of a future.

Plan B is not at all bad. Carlos Watkins is an excellent defensive piece to add to Bob Sutton's 34D. The Chiefs were already intent on keeping Jaye Howard inside at NT after Poe's departure. Howard played his best ball for KC when at NT, and he's a very solid starter. Watkins will team with year 1 stud Chris Jones as the starting DE duo. Veteran Allen Bailey will compete for snaps and the starting spot versus Watkins... while another good youngster in Rakeem Nunez-Roches will continue to backup Jaye Howard at NT.

Avery has some versatility to play inside or out, and KC adds to the talent and depth here. There are some IOL with contracts almost up.

Justin Houston has yet to get near to full health, though he should be 100% by season's start. Tamba Hali is a warrior that is sadly near the end. Dee Ford has a year left on his contract, though a 5th yr option to consider. It's time for the Chiefs to inject some pass rushing talent to the defense.

Marcus Peters and Terrance Mitchell are locked in as starting LCB and RCB. Phillip Gaines competes for RCB and Steven Nelson's NCB spot. DJ White also showed promise when healthy. Plenty of good CBs, but the value of Moreau is too enticing, and a couple of CBs will be out of a contract after the year.

Two words come to mind.. disruptive.. freak. DeAngelo Brown is a freakishly strong anchor upfront, yet also adept in getting backfield penetration. The Chiefs lost both starting DEs in the first half of 2016, and their man in the middle (Poe) had nagging back issues. The DL group will now consist of Chris Jones, a healthy Howard and Bailey... plus Carlos Watkins, RNR, and D'Brown. KC is in strong shape moving ahead to greatly improve the lousy run defense that plagued them.

DJ Alexander and Justin March are the expected starters while Derrick Johnson recovers.. yet again. Hopefully, the two youngsters improve as the DL in front does. If they do or don't, Marquel Lee has 3 down starter potential soon enough. He will compete with the aforementioned starters, and almost certainly push out Cole or Smith as depth.

Who among the starters would actually be replaced by a draft pick? I'd have had to reach at ILB with the way they were overdrafted.. what other position would realistically be replaced with a rookie starter?

The whole this is a gigantic cluster****. Plus, I hate these "mock drafts" before The Combines because everything always changes.

But just for starters, unless Mitch Trubisky shows up weighing 175 pounds at a height of 5'11, he's going Top Five. He has way too much upside to drop to #20 overall. That's nonsense. Complete and utter nonsense.

Secondly, the Chiefs have needs at OLB, ILB and RB, so there's no way they take a D-lineman in the 2nd and a non-starting OL in the 3rd.

It would be understandable if the Chiefs took a QBOTF with their first round pick but Dorsey isn't drafting FOUR non-impact players with his first four picks.

Besides the fact that it ignores great players and need, it's not Dorsey's M.O.

Okay. Well, this is how it shook out. It's a make-believe mock, and was just wanting some thoughts on how folks would feel IF this was the outcome.

I feel you did a poor job of expressing such thoughts, or explaining the question asked of who would have been selected that would actually be a 1st yr starter... but thanks for what thoughts you have expressed.

I don't know about Trubisky. I watched against Georgia in the 2016 opener and was not impressed. However, I haven't really had a chance to really scout him.

Cool. Thanks for the input. I had been back and forth over whether Gennesey can stay outside at OT. Not much available for OT after the first two rds in this draft class.
