Wasagaming Manitoba Canada

Anyone on here ever been up to Wasagaming in Manitoba Canada? The wife and I just booked our campsites for a week up there. Might swing by Winnipeg on the way up to check things out as well. Any cool places to go? We just want to veg for a few days but love to bike and hike too.

Don't waste your time in Winnepeg. I spent a week there for work once and the actual work was the highlight of the trip. There is one area of town call The Forks that is somewhat interesting, but other than that it was extremely booooring.

I've never been to Wasagaming, but have spent some time at Lake Winnipeg and it's great. Really nice little cabin towns, beautiful country up there. I have some very fond memories of Victoria Beach.

in Winnipeg locals will tell you to go to The Forks but it's is dumb. Generally just a crappy indoor mall/market kind of thing. Might be some events there in the summer I guess.

Smoke's Poutinerie, if you want poutine.

Culture is going to be in the Exchange District. There's a (small) French quarter called St. Boniface. The area where younger people hang out is The Village (Osborne Street) There's a decent art gallery. Assiniboine Park has a zoo, if you've got kids. Assiniboine Downs is a horseracing track.

Fort Garry Brewing makes good microbrews, highly recommended, but I think you have to arrange for a tour. By the way, anyplace in Canada where you put a beer to your lips (bar, restaurant) you're going to be paying US ballgame prices. Prepare thy anus

Winnipeg is only about the size of Omaha, but there's a decent amount to do for a city of that size.

Don't go in the winter.

Heh, I guess your experience was way different than mine. The Forks was a pretty interesting area just for the historical stuff.

All excellent information, especially about the beer prices. I was planning on buying and drinking a bunch of beer up there but I may have to drag along a lot of beer from the states. Might need to check on how much they allow to cross the border.

If you're driving up, Pembina is the last stop. Fill your tank there. Gas isn't any cheaper than booze up there. I think some people buy booze at Pembina or in Grand Forks. There are rules on how much you can import but a bottle or a case shouldn't be a problem, I wouldn't think.

There's a duty-free store at the border but I have never stopped there. Don't know what the deal is with it, but that might be an option. I'm not clear on whether it serves people crossing in both directions or not.

Sometimes you breeze through that checkpoint, sometimes you end up waiting 20-30 minutes on the weekends.

That gas information is valuable as well. We are pulling a big camper and I only get anywhere from 6-7 miles per gallon.

I believe gas is currently sitting at 0.99/litre so that's what...about $4 a US Gallon?

Thankfully the US dollar is crushing the Canadian dollar, so you might end up saving on some things that are normally prohibitively expensive, like gas, booze, restaurants, etc.

Yeah, I was just looking some of that info up. Slightly expensive considering my mileage.
