yea i just fear Franklin could be brought in and he could end up just being Ron Edwards part II at this point in his career, a guy that cant take up two blockers and can be handled by one guy.

it's the realization that our 34 defense won't have that BJ Raji, Haloti Ngata, Jay Ratliff, etc type guy and we have to just accept that. Franklin is not that guy. A lot of people here are riding on the Franklin hype of 2 years ago, when he was still having good seasons while the 49ers were franchise tagging him refusing to give him a long term pay day while Patrick Willis vouched for him.

I can't say I watched many or any 49ers games outside of the Chiefs one last season, but what I saw out of that 49ers vs Chiefs game wasn't some dominating defensive line like you'd see with the Packers, Ravens, Cowboys, etc and I'm not sure he would bring anything of an upgrade.

our defensive line this season may as much or as well hinge on the 6th rounder Powe and the Bailey guy to fill the Ron Edwards/Shaun Smith voids and just hope for the best. It's a long shot but as of right now we barely can get guys like Gilberry or Carr in camp so I am not really hoping for any outside FAs as I'd like for that to happen.

I'm just saying if we DONT sign Franklin, these have to be some of the factors why we didn't. So people shouldnt think we are missing out on some stud or impact player, because that may not be the case.

That's only possible if Pioli got a heads-up on Thursday that Warren was going to be cut the following day. Smith had already signed with the Titans well before Warren's release became public.

And if BB called Pioli to tell him Warren was getting the ax, why not just work out a trade for a late-round pick? Then Pioli gets Warren without other teams throwing money at him.

I think this team is being built more in the style of the Steelers than the Pats. The Steelers really aren't that active in FA, they try to build almost exclusively through the draft. And while it's exciting to get players from other teams, I think they should be used to fill out the roster more than being key components.

That being said we need to sign more players for depth on both lines. And I think we will.

Retained some absolutely neccesary pieces.

Still short on many positions.

This year real teams are on the schedule.

The Chiefs look nearly as bad as the Jets right now.

But keep up with your condescending questions. They're so cute.

Not as cute as someone raising the white flag before August comes around.

The difference is that Edwards was never a game-changer in the first place. Aubrayo Franklin IS a game-changer, when he wants to be.

And I think people are grossly over-exaggerating his 2010 collapse. They say he only played until he got paid. Well, 2010 was a contract year for him too. And people are forgetting that he held out because he was pissed off that he was franchise tagged. He didn't sign his contract until pretty much in September. Players who hold out usually struggle to get back into condition to compete.

And to your point... releasing Edwards makes signing a guy like Franklin a no-brainer. Powe is going to be rough in the early going and no way can he handle a full season of snaps. And Bailey isn't a Nose Tackle. He's going to play 5-technique. The Chiefs need a Nose Tackle and I don't see why anyone could possibly complain if it was Franklin, just for 2 years.

The approach may be the same, but the execution is different.

I remember calculating that Carl's success rate was something like 10-15% of players were in the league 5-10 years after they were drafted. IN THE LEAGUE. Not even serving as a backup.

Carl's approach would have been fine if he was average at drafting. Hell, even below average drafting would have passed. Instead, he was absolutely terrible. So yeah, the comparisons is completely apples to oranges, and a terrible one. And no, Carl Peterson does NOT deserve credit for the 2008 draft.

In case anybody else clicks on that link thinking it'll have anything to do with free agency right now, it doesn't. It's just rehashing Brees' comment about Chiefs spending in 2009 and talks about how the floor doesn't actually start until 2013.
