MU finally beats Illinois in Braggin’ Rights game

By MIKE DEARMOND
The Kansas City Star

ST. LOUIS | Whether or not you end up joining ’em, you can still beat ’em.

That seemed to be the idea as Missouri rolled to a seven-point halftime lead and then an 81-68 triumph over Illinois on Wednesday night.

Was that the first time Missouri had led Illinois in a basketball game in the current century? Well, no. But the victory was Missouri’s first over Illinois in this century, ending a nine-game losing streak to the Illini.

Speculation has run wild the last few weeks that Missouri might be a good candidate to fulfill the Big Ten Conference’s desire to expand.

The Tigers have not yet been invited to join Illinois in the Big Ten, of course. They might not be.

But they showed — from the first minute to the last on Wednesday — that they could hold their own against the Illini.

In fact, a 10-0 Missouri run late in the first half gave Missouri a 38-28 lead with just 2 minutes, 7 seconds left in the opening period.

Illinois cut into that largest of first-half advantages, closing within seven at the break. The Illini never got closer than six points in the second half on a night when seemingly everything — including a few questionable calls — went the way of the Tigers.

Missouri came out short-handed, with Zaire Taylor suffering from the stomach flu. The starting senior guard played only two minutes in the first half. He quickly picked up a rebound and an assist, but then asked to be taken out of the game with 11:11 to play. He contributed another big assist in the second half.

But this was a night Taylor’s teammates did it for him, and for Missouri fans who had almost given up hope for a basketball victory over the Illini.

Kim English played a huge role turning hope into a reality.

The sophomore guard hit four of five three-pointers on the way to 15 first-half points. English finished with 24 points and did more than just score. He also grabbed six rebounds.

Freshman guard Michael Dixon also delivered with 16 points and five assists.

Senior guard J.T. Tiller — finally getting a victory over Illinois — did a little bit of everything. He scored 12 points, grabbed five rebounds and also passed out five assists.

“J.T. was almost in tears in the locker room saying, ‘I’m not losing four years in a row,’ ” English said. “And there was nothing else to be said. All we had to do was play.”

English hated being part of the ninth straight loss to Illinois last season.

“That was the worst Christmas of my life last year,” he said. “I cried walking out of this tunnel last year.”

Still, players like English and Marcus Denmon and Dixon refused to shoulder the burden of the losing streak.

“We didn’t lose nine in a row,” English said. “We lost one.

“This is our team. This ain’t nine years.”

All five Illinois starters scored in double figures, led by Mike Tisdale’s 14.

But English said Missouri threw every player it had into the fray, including the flu-racked Taylor, who played only four minutes.

“We don’t have go-to guys; we’re just the ultimate team,” English said. “You don’t know who’s gonna step up.

“Mike Dixon stepped up, Steve Moore played amazing. The box score might not show it but Steve Moore played amazing. We finally started to figure out who were are.”

Missouri, finally, is a team with a resume victory to show out of the non-conference schedule come NCAA Tournament time. The Tigers are a big 8-3 with a good chance to finish 2009 at 9-3.

Well, I hope so. It's a bit of a rebuilding year in B-ball... just like it was in football. Both teams lost a lot of talent. But, this is encouraging.

Livin' and Dying by the 3 pt shot. MU shot well from 3 which was the difference in this game. MU was getting killed in the paint which is still going to be their problem throughout this season.

I don't. But I prefer not to get my balls busted by all the Illini fans in my office. I work in CHICAGO, you know.

And of course, pointing and laughing at that idiot **** CoMo is always fun regardless of the reason.

Thats the style of their play. No big men...wear your ass out and find the open man, which could be anybody cause they all can shoot.

So what happens when you face a team that has a very solid and deep back court? A team that has solid to great paint play, can shut down the outside and run the court with those big men?
