That was incredible. I don't think I've seen an outfielder whiff on a fly ball like that.

I think only 1 of those runs should be earned. Callaspo would not have been sacrificed home without the first throwing error.

I don't really understand all the nuances of scoring. But it would seem that since he got on as a result of a base hit and did not advance home solely because of the error, and the error didn't prolong the inning, that run would be considered as earned.

Nah, it was unearned, the scorer saw it the same way.

The question you have to ask is very very simple. "Would he have scored if that error did not happen?" In this case, the answer was no, but we didnt know that till the second error.

Callaspo is legitimately on 2nd, but the error advances him to third with 1 out. If we then had a double, then it may have been scored an earned run since he could score from second. Instead we had a second error after the flyout, which clinched the unearned run. Without the errors, he should have been stranded at second with only 1 run in.

Incidentally, once you have a situation where the inning should be over like that second error, then you can allow a million runs and none of them would count as earned.

Makes sense. It's interesting how much subjectivity plays into scoring, especially in determining what is a hit and and what is an error.

Which comes first - Pena's average dips below .125 or he gets sat down pretty much permanently?

Luckily this situation didnt require a lot of subjectivity. I think the only real hard rules are that you can never assume a double play. You can assume one out would happen without an error, but never two even if it looked like an obvious double play ball. (so man on 3rd, 1 out, error to shortstop, the run is still earned)

It gets really interesting where you have to subjectively decide if a man on second would have scored on a single. At that point, I just wait till the scorer makes a ruling because I have no clue what they will ever say on that.
