Our highways, they're all wrong.

I'm recognizing that if you drive from the east coast to the west coast, or vice versa, on a big road trip, you're destined to spend part of your day driving into the sun. That's just poor planning.

How about this instead? Diagonal highways, going northeast to southwest and southeast to northwest.

Yeah, I know it would be a bummer if you're traveling somewhere like St. Louis to Kansas City, but the net effect would cancel out against thos people who are going from Dallas to Denver. Overall, it's all the same, and you don't have to squint as much.

I think you could make a pretty good highway system with the following major highways:

NE to SW Major Routes

Hwy 1 from Boston to New Orleans
Hwy 2 from Cleveland to Dallas
Hwy 3 from Chicago to Albuquerque
Hwy 4 from Minneapolis to Los Angeles

NW to SE Major Routes

Hwy 5 from San Francisco to San Diego
Hwy 6 from Portland to Houston
Hwy 7 from Seattle to Savannah
Hwy 8 from Milwaukee to Miami

Anyone want to help me get started?

If you like diagonal, move to St. Louis. You won't know where the hell you're going, but at least the sun won't be in your eyes.

On the other hand, I70 before and after...

But Rainman, that won't work. Nope, not at all.

You see, the sun is to our south all the time so those going SE and SW would STILL have problems with the sun. You just have to keep moving in a basically northward direction or avoid driving at certain times of the day. Oh, I know! Night time driving only! You never have to worry about your visors or sunglasses that way!

Which do you think would be a more fun drive? Yes, that's right. The new system.

If you want to have fun, take the highways, if you want to get somewhere fast, take the Interstate.

When I lived in South Dakota, we were traveling to the West Coast about once every three months, interstate 80 across Nebraska and Wyoming to Salt Lake City. We discovered the first time that in order to make the best use of the sun in the rearview mirror was to leave about two hours before sunset, so we could go down I-29 to Omaha, and head west on I-80 at dusk and drive all night across Nebraska and Wyoming.
Worked for me when I was younger, and we could drive for 24 hours straight.
