Child actress Dakota Fanning will appear in a controversial new movie featuring paedophile scenes.

War of the Worlds star Dakota, 12, has signed up to appear in Hounddog.

The screenplay calls for Fanning's character to be raped in one explicit scene and to appear naked or clad only in "underpants" in several other horrifying moments.

A source close to the film said: "The two taboos in Hollywood are child abuse and the killing of animals.

"In this movie, both things happen." Fanning's mother, Joy, and her Hollywood agent, Cindy Osbrink, see the movie, written and directed by Deborah Kampmeier, as a possible Oscar vehicle for the pint-size star.

But despite Fanning's status as a bankable actress - whose movies, including last year's War of the Worlds have earned more than half a billion dollars since 2001 - the alarming material seems to have scared off potential investors, according to the New York Daily News.

The film charts the life of a girl who is abused and finds solace in the music of Elvis Presley.

Fanning's carefully choreographed rape scene has already been filmed. But then the production - which also stars Robin Wright Penn, David Morse and Piper Laurie - was stopped because of a lack of money.

But emergency investors were found and the movie is set to be finished by the end of the week.

"It's not just the rape scene - the whole story is challenging Dakota as an actress," Fanning's agent, Osbrink, said.

"And I've never been so proud of her in my life. In every scene she gets better and better."

I believe it's immoral to ask anybody to do something that is harmful to that person for your own gain. That's selfish at best.

If, in fact, Dakota Fanning does this movie and suffers from horrible nightmares or has trouble developing sexually as she grows older due to this experience than I believe that the director has done an incredibly selfish thing... Not necessarily illegal, or punishable by law, but definately immoral.

But age has nothing to do with it. If the actress were 25 years old, and the same problems arose, I think I'm guilty of the same selfish act.

That sums up the winning argument in this thread perfectly. Whatever the message of the scene is I cant argue with. Though you hit it there with the limits of reasonableness. Ill say it again and also stealing from TKs post a while back, the same can be done without showing a naked 12 yr old.

Yes, of course the message could be sent without having her naked. But that doesn't mean that having her naked is bad or wrong.

Obviously, the "rape is bad" message could be gotten across by a character just saying "rape is bad." Actually, we don't even have to make a movie, we can just print a bunch of leaflets that say "rape is bad" and pass them around...

I think saying that 10 percent of 12 year old girls are mature enough to make this kind of decision is reaaaaally stretching it. I don't think it's even close to that. We're talking what? 5th? 6th grade? No way on earth. Sure kids might find it interesting or whatever, but they don't have any common sense regarding how the power of sex should be used. Or what is appropriate.

She's still 4 years from being able to drive a car. You're telling me she's mature enough to make this decision? She may think she is, but she's not. Anyone who has lived past 12 years old could tell you that. Unless the rest of you guys all reached some sense of enlightenment that passed me by in middle school.

Just going by alluding to something in a film can be just a powerful. For instance with the same isue "Happiness" did it well.

I have kind of waiverd a bit in this thread but if done right to depict how bad the crime is in this scene by being very graphic could have meaning. Still cant really see the need for it and I am very open with films showing whatever they want to prove a point.

I can't believe people are defending this. Yeah, it's a movie, but she's still naked on screen, and it's still simulated rape, and it's still something that can screw her up emotionally.

You can just as easily get across your "RAPE IS BAD MMKAY" message by, as many people said, allluding to the rape without actually showing it. I mean shit, have the guy take her in a room, close the door, you hear a few screams and bam, onto the next scene. No nudity, no simulated rape, but the point still gets across.

That is an interesting point. If somebody on this board filmed a scene like that in their bedroom, they could probably get in a lot of trouble. If somebody went to court saying what they possessed "art", should that be acceptable? Interesting twist there.

1. "Happiness" made me pretty uncomfortable. I think it's pretty brilliant though, and an excellent example of how these things CAN be handled. But, I don't think that the movie would have been unacceptable if the kids were shown in the nude or partially nude. It would have made me even that much more uncomfortable, but either way, it's not porn.... IMO.

2. I think Americans are just raised to be messed up about sex. We're told from an early age that it's wrong and bad. Everything is taboo. The reason most of us are naive about sex when we are young isn't because we're SUPPOSED to be naive about sex, it's because most of this culture believes we should be "protected" from sex until we're old enough. Unfortunately, nature just doesn't see it that way. We start having sexual desires and mature sexually around 11-14 years old. While I still think that's way too young to be HAVING sex, I don't think children should be sheltered from it, or made to think that their bodies are bad, or that their desires are wrong.

I think you make some fine points, and we probably are repressed in some ways.

But that doesn't mean she's mature enough to make a decision like that. You said it yourself. It's too young to be having sex. Why? Because you aren't mature enough to handle it, or understand it.

Yeah that movie pretty much proves the point that TK started and I latched on to. I have watched a ton of foreign movies and still cant back what mcan is alluding to with them.
