I don't think the Yankees are going to give up Torres for anyone (probably not Sheffield either). If they do, yes I think you make the trade.

Why on earth would you include Fowler in a deal with Carlos Martinez?

Carlos is the best thing the Cardinals have to offer and you would kill the return you got for him by throwing in a guy with a .556 OPS making $16.5M for the next 3 years plus whatever he has left this year. To lessen the sting on the return the Cards would probably have to eat damn near all of that contract.

About the best you could do with Fowler is look for another teams garbage and make a Gyorko/Kemp type trade and hope for the best.

EDIT: Forgot the Cardinals gave Fowler a full NTC so you'll probably just have to release him.

I doubt the Yankees would offer Torres up for deGrom let alone Martinez.

Martinez is slowly making his way to a passable 2/good #3 pitcher. You probably wont get any highly rated MLB level prospects in a deal for him.

Probably look at what the Cubs gave up for Quintana. Quintana would probably be on the high side because it was a crosstown trade and the Cubs reportedly blew everyone else out of the water. But I hated that trade the second it was announced because I look at Quintana like I look at Martinez, not worth the acquisition cost.

Lester certsintly didn’t his best stuff today. You could have made a case he was the best NL pitcher in the first half.

that was kind of my point. If Torres is on the table you make that deal. We need at least 2 more “Torres” level position players to realistically compete and win playoff series.

JD consistently undervalues what pitiful talent we do have on the team. All these Yankees interested in him rumors are not just from blogs/fans. Rosenthal, Onley etc say the Yankees are interested. Although I’ve not heard Torres in the deal from reputable sources.

Martinez lacks focus not stuff or talent. When he is focused he is the neighborhood of “as good” a pitcher as anyone. We have seen him walk the bases loaded and then strikeout the side.

Cardinals president of baseball operations John Mozeliak conceded Thursday that the team could look to trade Jose Martinez to an American League club "at some point."

Interim manager Mike Shildt has had Martinez on the bench in both of his lineups so far, as he's preferred to go with the better defensive alignment with Matt Carpenter at first base and Jedd Gyorko at third. Martinez is sporting a nifty .299/.365/.478 batting line with 13 home runs and 56 RBI this season, but his defensive shortcomings make him a better fit as a designated hitter. He'll turn 30 next week but still won't be arbitration-eligible this winter, so there should be plenty of interest. Martinez's fantasy outlook appears cloudy should he remain in St. Louis.

How do I undervalue your talent?

You overvalue it.

Look at the career numbers of Martinez and Quintana and then look at when you are talking about trading Martinez vs when Quintana was traded. It's practically an identical situation. Now take into account that Quintana is a lefty, pitched in the AL, and the trade was a crosstown deal.

You could probably look to get one top 20ish guy, another fringe top 100 guy, and a couple mid tier guys with a peak potential of back end rotation/complimentary position player. You are out of your mind if you are thinking Martinez is bringing back a Torres. He's not a Madison Bumgarner level pitcher.
