It appears that Casey Printers will not be returning to the Candian Football League this season.

Terry Shea, the quarterbacks coach for the Kansas City Chiefs, told CKNW in Vancouver that he expects Printers will stick with the NFL club.

Kansas City is set with Trent Green as the starter and Damon Huard as the primary back-up, and the Chiefs entered their off-season workouts expecting a battle for the third spot between Printers and third round draft pick Brodie Croyle.

Green, who will be 36 this season, has been resting his arm in camp, which has given the Chiefs a lot of good looks at the newcomers. Shea said Printers and Croyle are simply too good to let go.

"Both of them will make this team," Shea told CKNW. "They've done a nice job of picking up the offence."

The only problem for the Chiefs now is figuring out how to carry four quarterbacks. League rules permit clubs to carry three, but another can be signed to the practice squad.

The Chiefs' training camp opens July 28.

Printers signed with the Chiefs in January after a short, but stellar, career with the B.C. Lions. He was the league MVP in 2004 after throwing for 5,000 yards, 35 touchdowns and only 10 interceptions. He also ran for almost 500 yards and nine touchdowns.

Printers, though, did not start the Grey Cup game, which the Lions lost. Injuries hampered him in 2005, and he lost the starting job to veteran Dave Dickenson.

After the 2005 season, Printers started to explore his options and signed with the Chiefs.

"We've had some good fortune with Canadian players," Chiefs president/general manager Carl Peterson told the Kansas City Star after Printers signed.

"I look at it this way: It's like having an additional draft choice. And this draft choice has pro football experience, albeit the CFL. It’s a bigger, wider field and so on. But I think he's got a chance to come in and help us. He’s going to be a backup for us and learn what we do and what this offense is all about."

After a workout last May, Printers told KCChiefs.com that his CFL experience will help him make the Chiefs.

"Well it definitely prepared me for this because in the CFL you have five receivers going out on every play," Printers said. "Here it’s kind of similar and we were running the same kind of stuff up there. It prepared me a bunch. I was able to play a bunch up there and I'm just prepared for the opportunity when it's given."

After watching him practice this spring, Shea has high hopes for the former B.C. Lions pivot.

"Eventually, Casey has a chance to compete as a starting quarterback in the NFL," Shea said.

But he does have Larry Johnson. All he has to do is not turn it over. He's already proven he can do that. Neither of the rooks have.

Well LJ hasn't proven he can be as effective without a strong passing offense. Huard proved he could protect the ball 7 years ago averaging about 1 turnover a game.... so did Shane Matthews and Ray Lucas. Croyle and Printers have the potential to make plays while keeping a low turnover rate. Huard has the potential to try not to lose games with his arm. Huard will make the team, but I would rather see Printers or Croyle in the game if Green went down.

If Trent Green goes down were super ****ed anyways so theres no reason why we keep Huard around. He wont lead us into the playoffs and neither will Printers or Croyle, but at this point we need to develope youth at the QB position and the best way to do that is to let the younger guys take more reps in practice and also if it came to be but lets hope not (if Green went down) play the younger guys instead of Huard. They're gonna be the future of this franchise and they need NFL game experience more than anything.

I really, really hate this line of thought. It's a defeatist attitude, especially if Green only misses 3 or 4 games. I think Huard can keep the ship afloat in that situation.

one more thing... Given the right conservative passing offense, QBs like Charlie Frye and Kyle Orton proved that they could protect the ball as rookies. I have no doubt that Croyle and maybe Printers could do the same thing.

Sure he can, but if two guys with better arms can do the same thing, why keep Huard? Huard can't make some of the throws that Croyle and Printers can make. the chiefs could run a conservative offense with LJ and a short passing game if Green went down. Croyle and Printers would be able to throw an occasional downfield pass that would add an extra dimension to the offense.

I don't belive that Printers brings the "same thing". JMO, but I'd rather see him go to the PS if possible. Otherwise, just get rid of him.

If Green goes down Printers brings a different dimension to the game with his mobility and other teams just won't be prepared for that. The good thing is we have two good prospects for QBOTF and I just can't see Carl and Herm screwing that up with Green's age. Then there is always a chance that Chad Pennington ends up in KC in the next year or two with Herm as the coach. It will be interesting seeing how it all unfolds the next couple of years. Green is the man though and I hope he can continue his starting streak for another two years.

Huard, as I've said before, lacks accuracy.

Regardless of whether he was any good in '99 in Miami, which I would dispute, he doesn't fit into an offense that requires timing and accuracy from the QB position.
