MELLINGER: Should The Chiefs Move On From Smith?

Yep, another Alex Smith thread - but a solid and fair read from Sam Mellinger.

Quote:
The only way forward is through brutal honesty and realistic self-evaluation. No sport moves as quickly, or with such little empathy, as the NFL.

Only fools assume what happened in the past will continue to happen in the future, unless that assumption is “the Patriots will win every year from now until armageddon because Bill Belichick is an alien.”

And so it is that this particular group of Chiefs players and executives attempt to solve a puzzle that no group of Chiefs players and executives has solved since 1970, which is so long ago CBS erased the tape to save money:

Get to the Super Bowl.

And it’s hard to believe that will happen without addressing the quarterback situation.

This is not a call for the Chiefs to walk away from Alex Smith, even though this is the first offseason since his arrival in which they could do it without a fatal salary cap hit. This is a call for them to look, to try, to make sure they don’t have access to a better option — whether that’s Tony Romo in a trade, Deshaun Watson in the draft (which would almost certainly require a trade up), or anything else.

Option A. Cut Alex, acquire Romo or trade for Rivers (if possible). Draft Mahomes

Option B. Cut Alex, play Foles and draft Mahones.

There is no 'Option C.'

How many picks are you dealing for a 2nd round talent?

Because drafting in the top 15 of a good QB draft in 2018 would be the absolute worst case scenario. Best case scenario is Foles THROWS THAT ****ING PASS TO HILL!

I'm not going to endorse another year in QB hell. The answer is not Alex Smith.

Mahomes has 1st round talent, he's just so raw that a team picking him needs to be able to afford to sit him for a season. Enter Chiefs.

1st, 2nd and 2nd next year.

I absolutely will not support a plan that includes Alex Smith. If Mahomes is too rich for you, ride it out with Foles and draft someone in '18.

If I'm Dorsey/Reid, my priorities are as follows:

1. Draft Pat Mahomes. You might have to trade up like Denver did last year, but either way, make it happen. KC is in the perfect position to groom him for a year and then let it fly. He has the highest ceiling in the draft IMHO.

2. Keep Foles or acquire Romo to start in 2017. I would say of the two choices, Foles makes the most sense. He is already under contract, has experience in the system, and is younger/more durable. Because at the end of the day, even though I'm sure Nick would be frustrating at times, I feel that he gives them the best chance to win the Super Bowl in 2017 in comparison to Alex. No matter what happens, you've still got your QBOTF in Mahomes waiting.

This needs to happen.

Ouch. Definitely too much for that level of talent IMO.

I endorse your Plan B. Deal those picks for a 2018 high 1st and you can get even more.

I could also get behind stocking up for a trade up in 2018 to get Sam Darnold or Josh Rosen, but in the meantime something still needs to be done. We do not need to waste 2017.

You'll have to deal the entire farm for Darnold.
