I can't understand why Fowler is still the leadoff hitter. He's complete garbage against RH pitching. I can't understand why Castro still bats 5th when he's barely a replacement level player this year. But what I've learned from these relief pitchers is that hoping for a 1-2-3 inning from any of them is like sticking your dick in a blender. Rondon has been dealing in his new role. When he was closing it was a roll of the dice. His games were littered with 4+ batters faced. I can't argue with using either Strop or Rondon in that situation. They've both been good and bad. I can only question why Motte was wasted in game 1 yesterday.
Yeah, I was going to mention going to Motte yesterday in game 1. The strangest part of that was that he went to him to get after Scruggs and Cruz. It's not like either of those guys presented much in the way of a credible threat.

And yeah, you have to believe that's the reason he was off limits today.

Maybe it's just because I'm not vested in the outcome so I don't feel the 'strain' even when Rondon puts a runner on. All I can say is that from an outsider's perspective, but having seen him pitch quite a bit, Rondon's stuff is impressive as hell and his command is definitely good enough. Motte mostly just hopes you hit it hard at people and Strop's delivery is just so loud that I'd never trust him to be consistent enough to close games.

Rondon's track record and stuff make him a no-brainer to me. If you can close games in your first full season in the majors, you have the stones for the role.

Given that, I'd probably say it's a case of the eyes telling a lie based on a presumption.
Yeah, the batted ball rates don't seem to support it either. He's drawing fewer swing/misses but that's about it. He's damn near identical to last year's performance and last year I recall thinking the dude was settling right into an ace role. This year I tend to feel like he's dancing through fire most starts.

He should be. Umpiring crew gave his cubbies every chance to take 3 of 4, and they failed.

Being a die hard RedBird fan, I gotta question Yadi getting the hook there. They were chirping at home plate all game, but this is the Majors, he's a rookie ump I think and that strike zone was super tight.

The zone was consistent for both sides and wasn't even that bad. Going purely by K-Zone, he was actually about dead on. The only thing he didn't give were the wide strikes that pitchers normally get against lefties. The problem is that those usually aren't even strikes.

Blue had a pretty damn good strike zone last night. That's 2 nights in a row that the Cardinals have gone at the umpires for what were, at worst, 50/50 calls and IMO the umps got both of them right.

Take care of it on the field, gentlemen. They aren't out to get you.

Totally. It's fascinating that they know more about other team's without watching any of the games than the fans of those teams. I've been in awe of that since I was a kid. Best, smartest fans in baseball.

Meh, I've always hated that argument. Just because someone watches all the games doesn't necessarily make them more knowledgeable per say.

Sometimes or for somethings it does tho I guess

Meh. Let me put it this way ... if Joe Madden was the Cardinals manager, DJ's Left Nut would find a way to think he was the worst manager in baseball. Just like LaRussa, now with Matheny, and whoever is going to be next.

I will enjoy making Hamas donate that $20 he'll owe me for our Volquez bet, though.

The strike zone has always been a tacit understanding rather than a letter of the law. When the outside is given against lefties, it, like the neighborhood play, is expected, especially given how Wacha was painting it with precision, as indicated by the strikezone map I posted.

You can't expect them not to take umbrage. It's like a ref on the NBA level deciding to enforce traveling with absolute fealty to the rulebook.

There is a lot of the season left for him to go above 4.00, especially given his peripherals.
