Quitting Smoking

Both the wife and I need to quit, and since we've tried to quit at the same time before, and THAT REALLY SUCKED, I took the plunge first.

Haven't had a cigarette since last night. I've quit several times in the past, sometimes for up to three months - quitting ain't the problem - it's staying quit that kicks my ass.

Any advice on non-smoking methods/products or encouragement would be appreciated.

Studies show that it takes aproximately 30 days for habit changeover.
Hang in there!

Actually, for me, it takes 90 days. That's how long I quit the last three times before starting again. Hanging out with other smokers is what always did me in. I'll really need to watch that in the future.

Thanks, everybody.

When you get to where you hate being around smoke and become a hypocritcal butthole toward those that smoke, you will have finally made it through the threshold.

I'm glad you brought this thread back up. Also glad to know you're sticking w/ it. I quit recently as well: It's Day 6 for me. It's been hell, and I feel like living death at times, but I'm glad I'm doing it.

Jesus, I smoked for over 23 years--it was past time for me to quit. The most surprising part for me is that the cravings for a smoke have dropped dramatically the last couple days. The 1st 48 hours however--what a fucking nightmare that was.

72hrs for the nicotine to leave the body, not to get over the addiction. I don't think anyone ever gets over the addiction.

Well, the wife fell on her ass today and apparently smoked half a pack while I was at work.

But I'm doing fine.

I average 3 smokes a day. Thats it. Ten cigs in a day and i feel my lungs are going to kill me. Sometimes i will go for days without it.
I just do it at work (sometimes) for something to do.
I could never get addicted, i don't care for it that much.

Been doing that for 15 years.

Plus i 'punish myself' for my sins by going to the gym 3-4 days a week.
I use the stair stepper 30 minutes plus working out.

People are taken back when they see me light one up if they don't know me.

Give it up Fraz, it's just not worth it. Cigarettes are great, I smoke 50 of them per day. Man, they are satisfying. There really is no sense in torturing yourself since you'll start again anyway. You will get even fatter and it will overwork your heart and you'll die before you're fifty. I'm 60 and in great health. I've been smoking heavily for 45 years.

I've seen people smoke for decades on end and do fine. Others will have problems early. You never know. Be like me and just pick and choose when to smoke.
But don't let it rule you.

Nicotine gum worked for me. I used smaller amounts than the guidelines on the package (mainly because that stuff is expensive and tastes like someone crapped in your mouth) and was able to quit a bit faster than normal.
