Quitting Smoking

Both the wife and I need to quit, and since we've tried to quit at the same time before, and THAT REALLY SUCKED, I took the plunge first.

Haven't had a cigarette since last night. I've quit several times in the past, sometimes for up to three months - quitting ain't the problem - it's staying quit that kicks my ass.

Any advice on non-smoking methods/products or encouragement would be appreciated.

Thanks RJ, I may stop by and pick up some patches. If they'll help calm the irritability that'll help.

There is actually something to that. Every time you smell or see a cig you have to tell yourself how bad it smells and how repulsive it is. It's called creating your own anchors and it's very effective in many areas of life.

Have any of you experience nausea and fatigue with quitting smoking? My husband is trying to quit and he's cut back, but he says he feels the worst he's ever felt.

It sounds counter-intuative but exercise is his best bet to conquer the fatigue. It will probably help with the nausea as well. He needs fresh air. A walk outdoors around the block a few times would do him wonders.

I remember doing that same thing, it helped quite a bit.

Cravings are still there. I am happy I quit but unfortunately I found myself snacking more. I need to have more gum around at all times.

I was also thinking that it would help as far as substituting; because I know part of it is that he gets to step away for 5 minutes, smoke the cig and destress; so since we're spiritual people, I was kinda thinking if he stepped outside to smoke, substituting that with a meditation or prayer or something like that. has anyone tried that method?

I'm trying to go cold turkey and it's been 3 days so far. I've tried the gum in the past, tasted like crap. I've never tried the patches but I hear you can have horrible nightmares from them.

I've been soooo irritable lately and been trying to hold back about snapping to family and co-workers. I have to stop for good this time. My will power is strong but is it stronger than 6 months like the last time?

Ugh! I'm getting headaches now too!
I quit many times before, I got really good at it. I could quit 4 times on one pack of Nicorette lozenges. (my choice over the gum and patch, the patch made me nausiated)
But after my recent adventures with a cardeoligist, I have no problems with quitting.

Yeah Ed, your thread about the stints really got me thinking. I'm 35 and have been a regular smoker since I was 17. I need to quit and I need to quit for good. Maybe talking about it here at the planet will help me out. Chiefs Planet... my support group

i just bought a tin of altoids and when i wanted a smoke, i would have one...

now i went through a bunch of tins of altoids, but they're way cheaper than smokes and it's been two years since i've had a cig, and honestly, i don't want one. they make clothes, houses, breath, cars all smell like crap. trust me, when sully has been off them a while, he'll realize it too.

Fortunately, other than a couple of my bowling buddies, I was about the only dumb shit still smoking in my circles.

I still smoke shisha occasionally as well as a few Beedi's every year. I probably also smoke about 50 cigars every year.

Seriously, do you inhale? I quit cigs for about 6 months one time. I started smoking cigars, and naturally inhaling them. Next thing you know, back on the cigs.
