Would you want to bring in Corey Simon for a look?

If so, let Carl know, looks like he's gonna be available.

Colts owner says former Pro Bowl tackle Simon will be released

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Colts owner Jim Irsay said Wednesday night that he expected to release former Pro Bowl tackle Corey Simon within the next few days, ending months of speculation concerning Simon's future with the Super Bowl champions.

Simon

Simon did not pass his physical over the weekend. He was expected to report to camp on time Sunday but was never seen at Rose Hulman Institute of Technology.

Irsay on Wednesday tried to clarify Simon's status with the team.

"Hopefully, we'll have something worked out with that. I think he may pursue his opportunities somewhere other than here," Irsay said. "I think we may come to an agreement in the next few days and he may pursue other places to play. I think it's better to get it resolved in the next day or two."

Simon did not play last season and was eventually placed on the non-football illness/injury list with an undisclosed ailment. Since winning the Super Bowl, the Colts have been debating what to do with Simon.

"Free agency is really risky and when they came to me with the opportunity I was OK in going for it," Irsay said. "You know the risk is there and it simply didn't work out. But as an owner who pays the checks, winning the Super Bowl is a nice massaging balm cream to ease the pain."

Colts coach Tony Dungy said he had been in touch with Irsay concerning the move.

"I didn't know how far along we were but I knew that was the direction we were going," Dungy said.

Before the 2006 season Simon had a knee operation. A non football related health issue was discovered at that time that was serious enough for the Colts to list him on one of those non playing out for season lists. They stated it was not their place to divulge the nature of the health issue and that was up to the Simon family. They have never stated what it is.

Colts then attmepted to get back some of the signing bonus. That failed but they must have thought they had a pretty good reason. So Simon was no where near Indianapolis this past season which was only his second with the Colts after signing a huge free agent contract at the start of 2005.

Failing the physical this time was a formality. Colts never intended for him to be back as he still apparently has the non football related health issue. They have now come to a settlement that will release Simon. But he was essentially released last year as before the 2006 season started Polian made it clear he would not be back.

Whatever this non football related health issue is, it must be a whopper. If Simon manages to hook up with another team then it won't be what I think it is.

Like I said, it's a moot point. He likely won't be playing football anywhere this season, maybe not ever again.

I bet James Reed can pass a physical.

Maybe it's a psychological issue, meaning he could pass a physical, but you wouldn't want him taking a psychological evaluation.

Does the NFL do that?

Go try out.

Couldn't hurt to "take a look", could it?

I mean, with all the POS DT's we're fielding now, I'm sure you have a legitamate shot.

I'd love to hear you argue we have any DT's worth any substance right now.

Considering them anything but marginal guys is hilarious.

The thing to me about Simon, is that he was brought in to Indy be THE guy of that interior & disappointed almost immediately. One has to wonder why he couldnt get motivated, playing for a perennial contender.

I think your discounting Boone too much, he was the 2nd best guy to Tommie Harris in Chicago & put up equal & in some categories better stats than Tank Johnson.

If we put him next to a space-eater like Edwards & spot-in our young guys & rotation guys...this interior could be a lot better than your thinking IMO.

Given a choice, wouldnt you rather bring in Tank Johnson???

Simon is probably the one guy in the NFL that could make Ryan Sims look like Jack Lalanne in terms of discipline and work ethic.

We don't know what we have in the 2 rookies yet, but I know the answer isn't a 30 yr. old who may have polyarthritis.

Marginal is better than that.

I'm sick of these "let's take a look...." threads, scrambling after other teams' scraps like a bunch of vultures. How about "Lets take a look and DEVELOP who we drafted?"

I'm tired of the homers who think that James Reed and Ron Edwards are anything more than 10-15 snap per game guys. Again, you act like bringing someone like him in would be the worst thing in the world. When you have a position of weakness like they do at DT, you don't leave any stone unturned.

Do I think Corey Simon is going to turn into his 2004 form? Probably not. But it wouldn't hurt to work him out if he's physically able to.

I may be speaking a little too early, but i think Turk McBride and Tank Tyler will be pretty good players.

With that being said, I think Alphonso boone can be a solid rotational player, and a decent run stuffer for the Chiefs. I think James Reed and Ron Edwards are solid rotational players and pretty decent backups.

As for Corey Simon, meh, I think I'd pass. Im more content with what the Chiefs have done already. And they have established some youth at the DT position. What else more can we ask for? just hope those guys are going to be good.
