2010 Kansas City Royals Repository thread

All Royals All The Time!

After consultation with others who peruse the game threads we decided to create this as a repository for all things Royals. Minor league news, AL (ahem) Central (thanks Vonne) news and anything Royals can be found here.

alnorth, me and atleast 5 others will continue the game threads as usual. But if you locate something of interest.. ANYTHING.. deals on apparel, best ways in/out of the stadium, giveaways, great stories from this season or from seasons gone by, rumors, trades, anything.... feel free to post it here.

If a big story breaks, you can still start a thread about it. There is merely an all inclusive thread that will make a easy for us all to keep up with all things Royals.

No. I'm talking about indicators that we know. At this point, he's a sub-par defensive player with a low OBP.

You keep talking about the need for more offense. Getting an elite staff would be another approach, and Greinke would immediately become your ace.

But I don't want the two "nice"--nothing more--pieces that are being discussed.

I'm not sure how this is not getting through to you. Snider is 22 years old. The fact that he even put up a moderately successful season at an age when many prospects are still in college or the minors (the aforementioned Braun) is incredibly impressive. What is he right now doesn't have much to do with what he could become a few years down the road.

What reason do they have to pay an ace for? So they can win 87 games again like they did with Roy Halladay in 2008? Keep the cheap, offensive talent and make a run when it's actually possible.

I would have loved to see what Braun could have done in the majors during his age 21 and 22 seasons. Chances are he wouldn't have done better than Snider did.

Gonna ignore the 4-1 K/BB ratio and the 180 K/season pace, huh?

Guys with that kind of strike zone judgment simply aren't going to excel. Sure, maybe he'll have a couple of 30 HR seasons here and there, but his 'power potential' will soon give way to ML pitchers that find the holes in his swing.

With that inability to command the strike zone, Snider's ceiling is far lower than you think.

I'm certainly not going to write a 22 year old off based on his K/BB ratio, no. You'd have to either be crazy or simply uninformed to do so.

It's getting through perfectly, which is why I've referred to him as a nice prospect. OBP and defense, however, are skills that should translate quickly, and these are red flags with this player.

Just like Delmon Young was? How 'bout Jeff Francouer?

Strike zone judgment doesn't just show up. It's a strange deal, it certainly seems like it should. But history has shown us, time and time again, that if you don't have solid strike zone judgment as a youngster, you're not just going to get it.

But that's okay - if you're extremely lucky he may end up like Preson Wilson someday. If you can just figure out a way to let him it at altitude, you might be in okay shape.

(BTW - Ryan Braun, at 23 years old, hit 34 HRs and put up an OPS above 1.000; yeah, I'd lay off asking what Braun could've done at 22. He'd have done far better than Travis Snider)

Snider's defense was good last year (look at UZR), and he has a good career minor league OBP. So again, I'm not understanding how or why you're writing this kid off going forward.

The confidence that you two have in projecting a 22 year old baseball player is hilarious to me. When Greinke was 22, he was struggling with a 5.80 ERA and poor peripherals, but I didn't see anybody ever suggesting that he didn't have the potential to become an elite player. Heck, when Roy Halladay was 23, he had a 10.64 ERA and was forced to go back down to the minors and change his delivery. He returned to become the most dominating starters of the 2000s.

But yeah, Snider's .770 OPS season at 22 means he'll never amount to anything!

Yes - that's exactly what I said.

Isn't that what you said, Deeznuts?

Jeff Francouer's MILB line: .285/.332/.480, 89 BB, 264 K, 1429 AB
Travis Snider's MILB line: .302/.376/.530, 170 BB, 401 K, 1412 AB

Snider may not have had a good K/BB in the minors, but let's not pretend here that he wasn't considerably better than those two. He's also a completely different kind of hitter than those two. If you're going to make actual comparisons, make viable ones.

That's nice, but he was still in college and the minors was Snider was actual hitting (and performing quite well, I should add) in the majors. While Snider may never become what Braun is offensively, it's far, far too early to write him off. And of course, Snider can actually play defense.
