2010 Kansas City Royals Repository thread

All Royals All The Time!

After consultation with others who peruse the game threads we decided to create this as a repository for all things Royals. Minor league news, AL (ahem) Central (thanks Vonne) news and anything Royals can be found here.

alnorth, me and atleast 5 others will continue the game threads as usual. But if you locate something of interest.. ANYTHING.. deals on apparel, best ways in/out of the stadium, giveaways, great stories from this season or from seasons gone by, rumors, trades, anything.... feel free to post it here.

If a big story breaks, you can still start a thread about it. There is merely an all inclusive thread that will make a easy for us all to keep up with all things Royals.

Welcome! "Grab a Brew... don't cost nuthin"...[spills beer on feet]

<== at the people that TRULY believe this.

This team has done nothing but taken home-grown talent and traded it away once they develope into good quality major league players.

I can't possibly seem to think management style is going to change as long as Glass is the owner and calling the shots.

Sure that is exactly what Ewing Kaufman did and if he was alive today he would be at the top of spending.

Like I said I am just a casual fan and I understand the importance of a farm system but I heard the same thing coming out of Allard Baird's mouth 10 years ago.

We are the Clippers of MLB.
Allard Baird didn't do shit to get the farm system to where it needed to be. With Moore, there's talk and a whole lot of action.

Would Greinke approve a trade to the Nationals? I think there's a pretty compelling case to be made that we're still in better shape than they are. Paying a third world country's GDP to Jayson Werth shouldn't exactly evoke a lot of confidence there, IMO.

Royals were 20th in payroll this past season at around 72 million. 85 to 90 would be about as high I would go just based on other teams in the area. Twins are 97 million, Cards 93 million, and the Rockies are 84.

Baird, more times than not, lacked the financial resources to try to do anything with the farm system.

Baird may be a terrible, terrible GM, but with the way that Glass was running the team at that point, AB was destined to fail the moment he was hired.

You're insane if you believe this. When Kaufman was the owner teams were spending a couple million a year on payroll, not hundred of millions. The chasm between large and small markets is huge now. Rich guys don't stay rich by losing $100MM every year.

That's true, but there are two big differences. One, Allard Baird is an idiot. Two, we never a farm system that was anywhere close to what we have now. Part of that was not his fault, as he didn't have the budget to go all out in the draft and international market like Moore does.

But this is nowhere close to the Baird-led Royals of the early part of this decade. We are unanimously the #1 overall farm system, and we were never close to that under Baird.

I am not crazy. you realize Kauffman owned his own pharmaceutical company don't you that sold for $2.2 billion dollars in 1989 and would be worth x10 as much or more now. He always made sure the Royals stayed competitive and he would do anything to keep it that way. His last year alive in 93 he spent $38.5 million on payroll.

I hope you and others are right on the farm system I really do but the Royals have no credibility with me so they are going to prove it on the field.

Exactly right.

In 1990 the Royals had the highest payroll in baseball, and Ewing Kauffman had billions of dollars to spend. If he hadn't died, or if he had a son or daughter who shared his enthusiasm, the Royals would be pretty much where the St. Louis Cardinals have been for the last 20 years. Not the Yankees, but pretty damn good.

Yep. Compare the 93 Royals to the 93 Yankess Payroll

Royals - $38.5 million
Yankees - $42 million

Highest paid player for the Royals was David Cone at $5 million per season and for the Yankees it was Danny Tartabull at $5.050 million.

This x10000

There obviously are 2 different philosophies in ownership styles.

Glass wants to make profit and winning comes 2nd or possibly 3rd.

Kauffman wanted to make sure talent was in KC and the team was competitive.

In baseball you have to pay to play. There needs to be a cap, but that will never happen though.

Ironically though when Mr. K went away from developing players to buying them, the team suffered.

Those last 10 years were hot gas spouted by the royal lancers, not backed up by statistics. We havent had a good minor league system in decades. This time really is different. If you dont see that, you either are not paying attention, or you are irrevocably wedded to a conclusion that no set of facts can move you off of.
