2010 Kansas City Royals Repository thread

All Royals All The Time!

After consultation with others who peruse the game threads we decided to create this as a repository for all things Royals. Minor league news, AL (ahem) Central (thanks Vonne) news and anything Royals can be found here.

alnorth, me and atleast 5 others will continue the game threads as usual. But if you locate something of interest.. ANYTHING.. deals on apparel, best ways in/out of the stadium, giveaways, great stories from this season or from seasons gone by, rumors, trades, anything.... feel free to post it here.

If a big story breaks, you can still start a thread about it. There is merely an all inclusive thread that will make a easy for us all to keep up with all things Royals.

Welcome! "Grab a Brew... don't cost nuthin"...[spills beer on feet]

Funny that Bambi was driving the bus to get Grienke out of town in exchange for a bag of balls. You two deserve each other.

Surplus value is precisely the reason we made the Greinke deal.

I did get a cheap laugh at your expense but truthfully, these topics are best left to people like Al North and Duncan who can understand them.

Looking back at this thread was fun.

Thoughts that stuck:

1) People that were saying 2013/14 as the Royals window for contention opening were definitely right.

2) People that liked the Greinke trade and thought it was a big win for the Royals were definitely right.

3) Mike Montgomery is a big, stinky turd.

4) Travis Snider, as it turned out, never has had a season as good as Adam Lind's. He has never: had 400 ABs in a major league season; posted an OPS of 800+ in a major league season; slugged as high as .463 again; turned into Ryan Braun; overcome his K tendencies or issues with K/BB.

KC_Connection was dead wrong about him. Thankfully, the Royals return for Greinke was much better than Travis Snider and Kyle Drabek.

Now, the Myers trade... I was not a fan of that initially because I expected the price to be much higher. Turns out the Royals were right about Montgomery and Pat Leonard and didn't lose much by moving them.

I also had forgotten the (now) laughable comparisons of the Greinke trade and the Garza trade.

Turns out the Rays got Chris Archer out of that deal and not really anything else.

Same here. Loved the Grienke trade and hated the Shields trade (largely because of losing Odorizzi).

Wow, I remember bashing Montgomery when many on here were defending him to the bitter end. Now, if I knew what would come of the Royals over the next few years, I probably wouldn't have cared as much, but back then, even one player looking crappy, especially a highly touted starter, was enough to put some serious doubt into my mind about the future of the franchise.

Luckily, that's what water under the bridge.

I still don't understand what happened to the guy. I honestly wonder if he was on some sort of illegal substance... because he lost the special velo awfully quickly, without an injury.

I thought Tampa might fix him by letting him do the workout routine he wanted to do (long toss) and by letting him develop a slider instead of a changeup, but obviously that did not materialize. Very strange.

I'm glad Duffy has panned out, though. I always kind of had a feeling about him. He's turned into what I thought they'd be getting with John Lamb (who I feel really bad for... gotta suck being one of the 10 percent who never comes back "right" from a TJ surgery).

Drabek has 8 career wins and 0 saves.
He had a 2nd TJ surgery and was never the same after that. I'd be surprised if he hangs on in the majors at all as a reliever. The funny thing is it was actually the failure of Drabek/Snider that made me so willing to accept Anthopoulos trading so much away for Reyes/Buehrle/Johnson/Dickey 2 years later (which hasn't exactly worked out for the Jays at all). Whether keeping their prospects or dealing them away, it seems they can't win no matter what they do.

That said, I'd still say my logic was sound at the time. Greinke was clearly not the guy from 2009 and has never shown that level of production again in his MLB career. He is a very good pitcher, though not elite. And as it turned out, the Jays wouldn't have had the ridiculous money to pay Greinke beyond that contract. What would have been the point in them trading their best prospects away (two guys, who at the time, looked at the very least like long-term cheap MLB contributors) for just 2 years of Greinke to add to a mediocre team? Now they'd have obviously won the deal from a value standpoint seeing as Drabek/Snider turned out to be busts, but Greinke's value itself wouldn't have done anything tangible for them as a team. Can't say I blame AA for not pulling the trigger on that (if it was actually available).

I wouldn't completely write off Snider just yet. At 27, he could certainly manage to still have a better career than a platoon DH/1B like Lind. He had his best year ever in the majors last year (a very good 121 wRC+) and looks like he could still potentially be a MLB regular. I fully expect him to haunt the Jays as an Oriole this year.

I think we all were pretty much in love the Greinke trade, hate the Shields trade boat.

Of course the Brewers deal was kind of let down because of what the Nationals had offered (Jordan Zimmerman and Ian Desmond) but still was pretty excited over it.
