KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Charlie Weis has agreed to become the offensive coordinator of the Kansas City Chiefs, according to team and league sources.

Weis could be named to the position within the next 24 to 48 hours, the sources said.

Weis will be reunited with head coach Todd Haley, with whom he shared an office when both were young assistants with the New York Jets. Weis also will be reunited with Chiefs general manager Scott Pioli, who was the Patriots vice president of player personnel when Weis was the offensive coordinator for three Super Bowl championships before going to coach at Notre Dame.

AFC West blog

Williamson ESPN.com's Bill Williamson writes about all things AFC West in his division blog.

• Blog network: NFL Nation

The Bears had also been in the mix to hire Weis as offensive coordinator but the Chiefs won out.

Haley ran the offense in his first year with the Chiefs after dismissing offensive coordinator Chan Gailey. Haley had expressed a desire to find a coordinator so he could better manage his head coaching responsibilities.

Weis was dismissed last fall with a 35-27 record in five seasons at Notre Dame.

"Charlie's a guy I have a great amount of respect for as a coach," Haley said Wednesday at his final news conference of the season. "He's a coach that system-wise, I would say we're as close as you can be. Charlie's a guy I consider a friend and I've talked to throughout the year, no different from some of the other guys I lean on for things and advice."

Haley has begun a staff evaluation and said he has already released offensive line coach Joe D'Allessandris and defensive line coach Tim Krumrie. Many fans also hope defensive coordinator Clancy Pendergast will be replaced, possibly by former Cleveland coach Romeo Crennel.

Haley was noncommittal about Crennel and Pendergast.

"No conversations in that order to this point," he said.

The emergence of running back Jamaal Charles, voted the team's MVP, gives the offense something to build on next year.

"I really believe we were able to lay a foundation for the Kansas City Chiefs," Haley said. "We were able to set expectations for our players of what's expected of them both schematically and offseason, in season and practice -- the way we're going to do things as a team on a consistent basis. I believe that foundation was laid.

"It was a very difficult year, a year we were able to make progress, as evidenced by the way the season wound down."

The Chiefs are expected to be busy in the offseason trying to fill gaping needs, including defensive back, wide receiver, linebacker, defensive line and tight end.

They pick fifth in April's draft. The could have picked third, but instead ended Haley's rookie year on a rousing high by beating Denver 44-24 in the season finale.

Chris Mortensen is a senior NFL analyst for ESPN. The Associated Press contributed to this report.

I like this hiring very much. This guy was the driving force behind Brady. I am more optimistic about next year at this point.

I was wanting to go a different direction for OC(I have no idea who.) but I read that Haley and Weis run pretty much the same offense so I'm up to luke warm.

For the second time in three days, the Kansas City Chiefs’ offense made huge progress.

Sunday, the Chiefs took a big step toward 2010 when they compiled 524 yards – including a team-record 259 rushing yards by Jamaal Charles – of offense in an upset win at Denver. Wednesday, the Chiefs continued progressing by agreeing to hire former Notre Dame head coach Charlie Weis to be the offensive coordinator. ESPN’s Chris Mortensen broke the story and expects the hiring to be official soon.

I love this move. It’s the organization’s first home run since hiring Scott Pioli from New England last January, and this is Pioli’s first home run as general manager. Weis could make Matt Cassel great.

He could help make Kansas City relevant again.

Weis and Pioli were together during New England’s Super Bowl run. Weis was the offensive coordinator and the man behind the development of Tom Brady and the Patriots’ great offense. Weis also has a history with Chiefs’ coach Todd Haley. The two shared an office together while with the Jets several years ago.

Combine Weis’ history with Pioli, Haley and the Chiefs’ need for a dynamic offensive coordinator, and this seems like the perfect marriage.

Haley – who said his system is very similar to the one Weis used in New England – was the team’s offensive coordinator after he fired Herm Edwards holdover Chan Gailey shortly before the season started.

This move allows Haley to spend more time on the overall team. He puts his offense in great hands. No matter what you think of Weis’ days as a head coach in South Bend, he can coach offense. His success in New England wasn’t a fluke.

Kansas City has a chance to make instant progress offensively. Charles, who was terrific at the end for the season and finished with 1,120 rushing yards, looks like a developing star.

But Weis’ biggest task will be working with Cassel. This move was made with Cassel in mind, and he has to be thrilled.

He is a product of Weis’ offense. Cassel was drafted by New England right after Weis went to Notre Dame. But he was brought up in Weis’ system.

This will be a seamless transition for Cassel. Expect his second season in Kansas City to be much more productive than his first.

As long as Pioli gets some more offensive line and receiving help, this offense should be well on its way.

Expect Haley, who started to tinker with the staff earlier Wednesday, to be a better head coach with Weis. Haley said earlier Wednesday that he leans on Weis. Now, he can do it daily. Weis’ experience as a head coach will help the young Haley develop.

Kansas City was smart to jump on Weis. There was competition. Chicago and New England were also expected to consider hiring him.

None of those teams needed Weis more than the Chiefs. The Chiefs are light on star power, and Weis gives this franchise some panache.

It also wouldn’t be a surprise if the Chiefs try to reunite Weis with Romeo Crennel, who was the defensive coordinator in New England. Crennel still hasn’t decided if he wants to coach next season, but if he does, the Chiefs could be a possibility.

A Weis-Crennel pairing would be another strong move by this team. They got the first half right. There simply are no negatives about this hiring.

I could be wrong but thought i remember reading Grunhard was seriously debating an offer to return to his alma matter and joing the stafff as a grad assistant coach last year under Weis. He turned them down but they did hire former 49er DT Bryant Young.

We do have a spot open for asst oline to learn the ropes under Bill Muir and work closely with the youngins like Darryl Harris on the PS most of this year, the types of guys that don't get the reps but need help with their technique, etc.

Grunhard doesn't make sense in the fact he works for the enemy media though.

Just kinda a not much of anything deal to throw out there.

Now THIS is the type of news I like to see after coming home from a long day's work!

And this won't influence our pick at number 5. It will, however be required that ALL sixth round picks can only be used to draft QBs

i don't either. I think he wants to make/continue his career in radio. Plus his ties and friendship with Bill Maas would be a problem keeping things private.

Kinda like James Hasty did actually talk w/Vermeil a couple times about being the CB's coach working with Guinta. He was just shocked at how little he would get paid and the hours he would have to work.

Better off going with someone who is hungry.

Like i said it was kind of a not to do with much type of post.
